in the beginning, God created everything... including man. man was supposed to hang out with God, chill, do a bit of gardening, enjoy life to the full..
man messed it up pretty quick
mankind has suffered the consequences of that
Jesus came and reconnects us with God again. now we can hang out with God, chill, do a bit of gardening, enjoy life to the full..

not really that keen on the gardening bit tho

That cartoon is seriously the most fucked up thing I've seen a long long long long long long time..
The climax is: "Cathy told you that I died for you...now fuck off and burn forever, you twat...", with the kid saying "I made a mistake"...
Tough - burn forever, you little fucker.Well - to anyone that believes that actually in some way bears any relation to what you believe to be true, or somewhat more nastily, would WANT to be be true.
Go.
Fuck.
Yourself.
If your vaulted idea of the creator of the universe, your concept of pure infinite love, wisdom and power is so pernicious and full of himself that he does not have that forgiveness or compassion that I as a mere mortal can manage, then you can fucking forget it, and I just don't want to know.
Sign me up for the fiery pit, right now.
That is the fucking heart of the problem with all of this. Believe this (like you ever have a choice to 'believe' anything), or you will go to hell.
And they teach this to kids.
Kids.You fuckers.
Seriously go fuck yourselves.- Despite the fact that it purposely confounds "social darwinism" with evolution...TheBlueOne

mikotondria3 - sounds like this touched a nerve?

Yes, it's a really fundamentally nasty nasty idea - that they teach to kids. I was a kid, I have a kid - the fact that there are millions of these freaks out there with the fucking persecution complexes and their pamphlets knocking my door trying to seep this poision into my kid's mind, week in, week out, across the globe, makes me as angry as if they were pedophiles..
Oh!...haha, yes - a lot of them are.The next bum-faced little 'brother Andrew' that comes onto my property and tries to scam this shit into my house is gonna get a whole load of 'social darwinisim' come down on him..

hahah, I LOVE to get irate about this, the oldest and most profound discussion there has ever been. It really is the thing that makes us the most human, and I feel most alive when discussing or thinking about it.
I don't hate anyone, and I would never harm anyone based on their beliefs - I could and do get so angry that I could like - smash a car with my bare hands, yo, but would never lay a finger on any of my fellow men in anger. Christians, Jooz, Muzlems - you are welcome in my house at any time, and it is a privilege to share this wonderful world with you.
That's the truth.
I don't need a god to aspire to the principals of love for fellow man and all the other morality that is secondary to treating people the way I would want to be treated, and seeing everyone as a brother.
See how little killing and door-knocking goes on with this sort of life ?- It is fundamentally human nature to be kind and wise and compassionate. QED.mikotondria3

so... a good person who has done no harm to anyone, to anything will go to hell only because he doesn't believe in any god?
that doesn't add up for me.
i say god exist or not is not important for us to care.
if he is truly as great as the religious said he is. we human can not ever define what he does nor say who he/she is.
religion is a waste of time to participate in. No offense. I just really don't like the whole sunday morning, ritual, ceremony.
we should all simply do good deed and and be nice to everyone including your self. just simply that the world will be a better place.god is something nobody can say what he is. that is if he exist.
- Fariska0
Something irrational on our being + to not be able to answer some questions + having people together sharing same values create a strong atmosphere (see point 1) = religion
- breadlegz0
hi pango... to me the sunday thing isnt like a ritual. its like meeting up with a few hundred mates.
I agree with you that we should all be doing good stuff and helping each other out. thats what makes the world a better place.
Jesus used to get really angry with the people in his time that spoke about keeping the laws but didn't love their neighbour. i think he swore. not sure

If I were a god, with with power to create sentient intelligent beings with the power to ponder my existence and search for me, I would grant him the grace of privacy of thought and deed free from divine judgement, even after death. The greatest gift I could imagine I could bestow would be freedom from my oversight, with the intellect and heart to love one another and make sense of the universe.
If this is truly the case we are left with a paradox....
This god described above, who so loved the man he had created would then prompted disappear, in the ultimate sacrifice, as a gift to man. This is a god in whom I could believe, and one that could quite easily have existed within a p-brane universe now being postulated in cosmology. If this is the case, and he is reading this from his position, his only existent moment - at the beginning of time - then - sir, "Well done - you have made something truly remarkable, and I am eternally grateful and humbled to be a part of it".
We atheists too share in the sense of wonder, humility and gratitude to be alive, we just don't paint a face on the void and talk to it.

Then there's the whole "man created god" thing; that, yes, this force does exist and is real, but is the result of a multitude of people focusing their energy (ie praying, going to church, believing, etc) on the same belief. This (to bastardize the Chaos theology) manipulates the ether (the myriad of possibilities that exist) into forming a reality. PRacticed alone this can be accomplished on a small scale. But when amplified by the millions of believers in whatever religion, i t kinda takes on a form of it's own

Imagination is more important than intelligence.
The most complex of scientific theories should be explainable to a bar-maid.
Who are you ? How did you get this number ?

Oh, we're all knocking on doors around here. Every single one of us espousing ideas in this thread, Christian or non-. Let's not kid ourselves.
miko, I believe the best kind of love can only be imparted from a supernatural source. Anything else pales in comparison. Again, the pursuit of excellence here. I believe a certain amount of morality is embedded in us all, because we are intrinsically moral beings whether we believe it or not.
If all I believe in is the Golden Rule ("I'll treat you the way I hope to be treated"), then I'm really just scratching my own back. Karma and all that. It's really just personal well-being insurance, looking out for oneself. Ultimate selfishness. it doesn't work for people in the long run. I can only be made free from the chains of my own selfishness by receiving divine intervention.
- What this says to me is that you don't believe people can socially evolve enough to do good for the sake of doing good, that they have to have the Big G-man looking over their shoulderlocustsloth
- good, that they need the Big G-man looking over their shoulderlocustsloth
- Exactly. Social evolution is horse shit and implies a misunderstandng of human nature.gramme
- so then religion is the resignation to the possibility that we can modify human nature...locustsloth
- ...with that wonderful thing called "free will". Check it out, Rush wrote a song about itlocustsloth

i love this article - my whole family gives me shit about not being religous and not going to church with them...now i can be like, well you're stupid and Albert Einstein thinks your beliefs are primative legends and preeeettttty childish if you ask him. haha yesssss!
- locustsloth0
This debate is, in my opinion, a result of people not wanting to objectively challenge their own beliefs and humanity's general inability to accept the answer "i don't know"
