go out and get a drink with him/her.
learn to communicate together.either he's not a good teacher or you're not a good learner.
if you guys can learn to communicate about other things,
then you can learn to communicate about work.

good AD/CD = good work
bad AD/CD = bad work

Try to work for a News station, and you will learn how to take critics and shut up! Producers are the worst, they walk all over you and they don't care about anybody. And ADs are never on your side.
I used to think like you, but I learned my lesson. Because of the way I was thinking I almost got fired.
Fortunately though, I was given another opportunity, and since then I learned that I am not always right, and that I HAVE TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND, rather than defend my ideas. If you stay in that state on mind, you'll go nowhere.

In the end Bruce Lee had it right:
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

CodenameAM
kupia that a silly way of looking at working with or for an AD or CD....
RESPONSE:
Dear CodenameAM,
I'm sorry I didn't take into consideration people who might be narrow minded and possibly don't read with a comprehension level past grade school.
When I said that your AD is giving you direction because he/she is telling you what they WANT FROM YOU I never said that that your best was not what they wanted. Obviously that is exactly what they want while at the same time keeping the clients wants and needs in mind, which is a must. (Is this not a 'given' any more?)
I don't understand why you said my post was silly when you ended up saying almost the same thing in different (and grammatically incorrect) words.

until you are your own boss being a good designer is about taking other people's suggestions and criticism and applying it.
even if it sucks.

You are not going to move up from being an intern until you are humble enough to take criticism and turn it into something positive.

One day you'll have to look into a prima dona designer and see how ridiculous you are acting now. If you can't handle criticism, then work in a noncreative industry... if you want to accell at an agency then learn about working within an organized environment, read up on pop psychology and figure out the massive dynamics of what makes people tick.
Because in the end, you want to be the 'good' guy, no? If someone calls your current AD, it's only logical that you want him or her to say you were 'easy' to work with rather than the opposite - difficult.
I don't think enough designers understand the nature of business. That being said, I'm just about ready to throw my towel in on 2D design... because in the end it does kinda suck when a client or SR creative washes down a perfectly acceptable idea.
Someone should write a book titled, How to Be A Designer Without Feeling Like a Bitch.

Bravo... No go to the AD and tell him that after spending an hour talking to your internet "friends" from the office you turned a leaf

Lesson learned.

Chances are your AD understands a client's brand better than you, that's their job. Even if they don't, you really should assume they do. Many times, one needs to be "coached" not because their ideas aren't good, but because they aren't on-brand, and therefore not usable. Your ideas may be better, but they may not be in line with the brand's needs, which comes first.
- ok I get it, this seems to be the consensus.....consid... me a changed manepigraph

Put the version you like in your folio, and give them what you want.
Everyone's happy.

Where i work what comes first is someone that you can work with... sometimes you have the badass that is impossible to work with and has an attitude it brings morale down and it is usually fired... better to have harmony and not everyone might be the star but as a group the endresult and workplace is better
