I think there has been an alternative for oil fueled transportation for many decades, but a lot of people with "making decision power" will loose a lot of money. So just now they are starting to change that. (at least to consumer level). When the consumer is starting to look more into MGP rather than if a car will park itself or if has GPS navigation.

I've never understood 'big oil's' resistance to clean fuel solutions or renewable technology. I'm sure if I read a book or two about big oil culture I'd glean a bit more, but c'mon. You have the market cornered on oil as it is. Why not migrate that voracious capitalist appetite over to clean fuels? Why not simply develop and own the technology? You'll still be rich, dammit.

Interesting listen about Germany and energy independence. They're way ahead of anyone else:
http://www.electricpolitics.com/…
The guy (Herman Scheer, President of the International Parliamentary Forum on Renewable Energies; Member of the German Bundestag) makes an interesting point that you can't wait for global consensus cause then you'll always be waiting for the slowest adopter (looking at you USA and China), and by then it will be too late.

I hate to talk about Japan again, but it was seriously an eye opener for me. One example of how ass-backwards America is, there was a news story this morning about how Miller Park (where the Brewers play) is going to start a recycling program. It is 2008 and you are starting a recycling program?
How fucking ridiculous, in Japan, everywhere there are 4 different garbage cans, One for plastic, one for cans, one for combustibles and one for non-combustibles. People in America just seriously do not give a fuck about anything if it means they have to change their sedentary lifestyles.

Myself included and I'm trying. A culture of waste is hard to fight alone.
- so true! I give up my car for about 6 months a year for the bike... but like you said, 1 person can only do so muchCultr
- My wife browbeats me if I walk in the door with yet another plastic bag...TheBlueOne
- the answer is really amazing technology that will solve all the problems. waste doesn't have to be such a big deal.ribit

Great point. I am very into recycling and it bothers me that noone cares to make the least bit of effort to recycle something. If it doesn't save them money they just don't care. Just like in the height of SUVs a few years ago, the drivers had no concern for the environment. No finally gas goes up, it affects their money and now they are finally starting to go for more efficient cars. I am ashamed of our modern society on many levels.

WSJ editorial - http://online.wsj.com/article/SB…
"I don't want to alarm anybody, but maybe it's time for Americans to start stockpiling food." FFS

'Poor' countries such as Haiti are already going crazy over this rice crisis. It's crazy watching the news and seeing riots over food, feels like I'm watching a Nostradamus special. But I agree with most of you guys, here in the USandA, nobody gives a shit, people call radio stations complaining about gas prices and when asked what type of car they drive, they respond Suburbans or Hummers...wtf?
Maybe this is what we need, an issue of this magnitude to open our eyes and realize we're fucking up everything. Realize that oil, food, etc won't last forever....

mormons have been stockpiling food for decades. if things get grim, just swing by a compound around supper time.

"Things are so bad right now, we can't afford to be pessimistic"
Lester Brown, President Earth Policy Institute.

Meeklo, the "rice price" crisis is affecting people in poor countries who can just about afford rice to feed themselves. They end up not being able to feed their families anymore. The newspapers has been covering this for some weeks. It's dangerous because it might start wars and violence outbreaks.
- Redmond0
Anyway, one hopeful news I read is many of those places can grow their own rice, they either don't cause they've centered their economy over something else or the local producers only want to export for more cash.
