Just got an e-mail from my mom that is instantly absurd and really puzzled me at the same time.
here's the forwarded e-mail:
"Digital Clock
Every now and again there comes along a graphic so good that it just blows you away.
The University of Poland science students have finally finished their digital clock they have been working on for 4 years. Go to this site to see the results:
http://www.yugop.com/ver3/stuff/…
Wait for it to load. This is a real clock, and it's accurate. And check the time out too."
My mom forwarded it and said "this is really something!"
She probably got it from a coworker or something, but WTF is with someone sending this as done by "Polish science students?" Is that supposed to be some kind of a joke?

Set her straight.
- 7point340
send her 2 girls 1 cup... title it 'you like that? now THIS is something'
- marychain0
Okay...it's kinda neat
BUT 4 YEARS!!!!!!!!!
WTF???
- harlequino0
Reminds me of the time I had to explain to my mom why she needed to be careful spelling "goats" when doing an image search.

I first saw that clock idea in about 2001. No kidding... I think Vince Frost did it first for one of his old webistes.
- lvl_130
that is funny. i like the "they have been working on for 4 years"!
wow that is some complicated clock to warrant 4 YEARS of build time! hahaha

I wrote her back and said:
"I have been going to that yugop site for years actually. He's a designer/programmer in Japan and was really popular when I started doing web stuff in college.
But here's the thing - that link you sent has been around since 2001 and it does not have anything to do Polish students. It's all by one person, Yugo Nakamura.
Who sent that to you? it's just odd because it's completely not true. Maybe they're just being funny."
- dude you timelined yer momcoalson
- hotharlequino
- she deserved it. the whole bloody lot of em does!!
*shakes fist angrilyPoint5 - haha @ timelining one's momComplexfruit

My Dad sent me a forward yesterday of an image set of ad concepts that have been doing the rounds for a few years - the 'perspectified' livery, one with a lager bottle 'projecting out of the side'. The kind of thing that could never actually work in real life.
Same thing - somebody back along the forward chain had added mistruths to it - suddenly they really exist and have been 'seen on the roads in Germany'. He must have been amazed. I'm not going to tell them they are photoshops - I don't want to ruin the magic and, reputation here aside, I don't want him to think I'm trying to be all superior.

I realized recently that my Mom is a bit out of touch with technology (or that I'm an idiot for even trying to describe tech things to her) when I tried to describe that I can "send music through the air wirelessly from my computer to my Xbox."
I admit, it was stupid to even think she'd understand. She's 57, but she doesn't have a clue what an xbox is.

my mom busted me a few weeks ago. My parents send me THE WORST forwards all the time, without even a personal message like, "Chris, you have to see this, it's awesome!" They just press forward and send to everyone in their address book.
I delete 99.9% of them and open that .1% out of guilt.
Well I was visiting them a few weeks ago and my mom and I were at their computer and she asked if I saw "that slideshow" she sent. I said no. She was hurt and offended that I didn't open it and proceeded to open the powerpoint deck and sit through it with me. It was beautiful, and my mom was genuinely thrilled with it.
But I will still continue to delete most of the forwards.
Carry on.- stop lying.tasty
- ur not the only one
she emails me that shit as well although does she go by the hornyfuckslutWeLoveNoise

I've said it once, and I'll say it again - 'let me turn the fucking sound off -- you're ruining my music'

I just... I can't believe you all have parents that operate internets and emails. My parents have no technology. They have a mobile phone which they will only ever switch on when the mythical emergency finally engulfs them, at which point they'll discover mobiles went digital, Mercury Telecomms went bust, their battery bled to death in 1994 and nobody has little pull up plastic ariels any more.
So be nice to your parents who email you. My don't. They still call me five times a day to tell me at great length what the dog just did.

I made fun off my Dad for not knowing what Facebook was.
Then he made an account, added me as a friend which gave him access to my limited profile which at the time was full of embarrassing photos.
He then made fun of me for not limiting my privacy settings.
- PWNED!brains
- lol

My mom called me once to ask me how to log into her office Intranet's benefits site.
I repeat: My mom called to ask ME how to log into HER WORK OFFICE INTRANET BENEFITS SITE.
She said "I put in my username and password and it's not lettting me in, am I doing something wrong?"
I told her three times that I could not possibly help her and it's like she didn't even hear me. I finally said "don't you have an IT department you can ask?"
The typical "well you're really good with computers I thought you'd be able to figure it out" response followed. Good Lord!

Not to go on a complete and total Mom rip...
But every single time I talk to her and mention my band, or band practice, or upcoming shows, she reiterates that she has asked me many times: "When are you going to play and sing and record that Snow Patrol song [Counting Cars] for me?"
She brought that up about 6 months ago after hearing it on the radio and said "I think you could really do that song the same way with the way you sing."
The thought is awful. That's just so cheesy. I pride myself on knowing a total of TWO cover songs total (both Smiths' songs, There is a light that never goes out, and Handsome Devil). I think she'll die unhappy one day if I never do it. She bring it up all the time.
- just learn it and play it for her... might be a good mothers day present7point34
- I think I'll learn Whiskey River instead.mg33
- dude. jam with your parents. It will make your day. I played a show with my parents band a while back. 13 years ago and they STILL talk about how cool it was....stoplying

my mother likes to forward the fowards she gets... one time when i was visiting she asked if i got that one that was 'pretty disturbing' about gang members in cities that drive around at night with their headlights off and when you flash your highbeams at them they chase you down and kill you... i stared at her blankly for a second and then calmly explained that it was an urban legend.... she said well i dont care what it is its sick and its one more reason for us to move out of the city... again i stared and then again repeated no, mom, its not real its made up. that's what an urban legend is... and then she got confused. 'but its documented. its right here,' she maintained.... i said no mom, the email is made up too... 'but'.... and all its sources...
- 7point340
my mother also likes to job search for me... finding all sorts of jobs that i am no where near qualiified for. she sends them to me because they are computer related.
when i tell her that i'm not a programmer or an engineer or a cad designer, she looks at me and is like well you could learn right? which is an innocent enough question but its not likely that i will learn to be a computer engineer in the month or two between applying and the first day on the job

After a girlfriend breakup 6 years ago here in Chicago, my mom actually searched personal ads for me and sent a few girls that she thought seemed nice to "brighten my day" or something.
THAT was horrifying to the n'th degree.
