I am looking into a digital SLR, what do people think of the Canon Alpha Series?
Any other suggestions?

Alpha is Sony
get the XSi

you can find the xti pretty cheap now. i'd go with it and put the savings into a nice lens.

i'm partial to Canons since I've had good luck with them but all systems have their up and downs.....
what will you be shooting?
- big-papes0
Well mostly I will be shooting live music and portraits, probably a little still life

Nikon D300, period.

than you will want to stick with the big names - Canon or Nikon
both produce excellent images which are nearly impossible to tell apart.
my only advice is not to spend all your money in a body. camera bodies depreciate fast. look at buying good glass and lighting equipment - they hold their value much longer

the Nikon D300 handles noise very well with long exposures and high ISO speeds which you will need for live music concerts but all that is crap if you get a crappy lens.
I recommend NOT to buy a lens online before you get to see it live. Some lenses are made of plastic instead of real glass, they're much lighter and the image quality is bad. Also buy a UV filter for your lens. it's a lot cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a lens.

Live music, probably in low light, for that reason alone I went to Canon, most photographers I know say that nikon is not very good in low light situations, of course this was 3 years ago, the situation might have changed now, I'm sure Daro or ismith will know.

- how was he live? his music reminds me very much of boards of canada.the_fuzz

I just bought the Canon 40D on Saturday. Got the 17-85mm lens to go with it. I am in love ;)

canon 40D for sure. if your budget is smaller then go the 400D with a nice lens, the standard kit lens is rubbish.

See if you can find a Pentax K10d. semi-pro level camera for ~$600.
I'd take it over an XSI any day.then spend the money you save on some fast weather-sealed lenses to match:

I just sold a K10D. Pentax ergonomy is great. The in-body stabilizer was nice, but sensor was too noisy for my liking and the camera was a tad slow and in the AF department, especially for night shots. From what I hear, K20D is a step up.
I did manage to take more than a few shots with it that I'm satisfied with.
http://www.qbn.com/topics/408150…I got a Canon 5D for now, but keep 3 favourite Pentax lenses for somewhere in the future.
