how many native French actually speak english? meaning, how well would a english-only speaking person fair if he were to move to France and couldnt speak a lick of it.

pretty well if all they had to do was clean toilets or make beds and sell hash...then i'd say they could make some decent monies

My suspicion is you'd learn french faster than you'd begin to run into these bi-linguals you speak of.

if you plan on living there - learn at least a basic conversational level before you go.

i heard london is pretty sweet if you can afford the rents and then you don't have to worry about much of a language gap.
- that's where I'm going! :)

i lived on the French riviera for two years....you meet a lot of people who can speak English, but mostly at a pretty basic level. You'll definitely need to pick up some French just to get around and do basic stuff. That said, it's a pretty sweet place to live if you can afford it...lots of sun, beautiful women, and good food. Good hashish too.

it's really up to what you do for a living and what kind of people you hang out with, also up to the city.
if you work in design/print/illustration/motion graphics/photography/fashion etc in Paris, speaking English only shouldn't be a problem, same if that's the kind of people you hang out with.you'll still need to catch basic everyday stuff to run errands, get the check at restaurants etc, good way to start learning.
if you live in the countryside and are employed in a factory, not so easy..

Huge amounts of French people speak English but French is a piece of piss to learn so have at it :D

People will generally have more time for you if you have made an effort to learn the language before moving to their country.
How much time would you have for someone who hadn't learnt english before moving in down the street from you?

I live in Ottawa, where most things are bilingual (because we live near Quebec). I work with French people, and we start learning French in elementary school. So I can understand most of it. I've never been one to learn to speak most languages myself though...I'm more into understanding.
Learn the basics of the language before you go. If you hang around French people all day you will pick it up eventually.
- Have you ever been to France?detritus
- No, I have not. The French is different, I know that much.Jaline
- I understand the French look at the Quebecois much the same way as we look at Britney Spears.gramme

eventually is the key word. unlike english, french (like portuguese or spanish for example) has a very distinct way of working with grammar and vocabulary. you have different kinds of YOU for example (one for your mates, another for use in a more respectful way, another for dealing with strangers etc) and different ways of using nouns and verbs etc depending on the situations, sex (yes female or male), plurals, and who you're talking to. It's a hard language if you're not already used to that kind of thing and the french are not the most foreign-language friendly people.

Yeah...so...learn before you go :)

that is very true. I hate seeing tourists who don't even try to speak a more common language (like english for example) and expect everyone else in that country (which is not their own) to understand what they are saying.
