it's really up to what you do for a living and what kind of people you hang out with, also up to the city.
if you work in design/print/illustration/motion graphics/photography/fashion etc in Paris, speaking English only shouldn't be a problem, same if that's the kind of people you hang out with.you'll still need to catch basic everyday stuff to run errands, get the check at restaurants etc, good way to start learning.
if you live in the countryside and are employed in a factory, not so easy..
