  I live in Ottawa, where most things are bilingual (because we live near Quebec). I work with French people, and we start learning French in elementary school. So I can understand most of it. I've never been one to learn to speak most languages myself though...I'm more into understanding.

  Learn the basics of the language before you go. If you hang around French people all day you will pick it up eventually.
