I'm stumped... each has it's own pro's and cons obviously but I just can't make my mind up...
Help please :)

D40x or just go with a D40. I know this forum has more Canon lovers than Nikon lovers so everyone else will tell you to get a 400D.

I just went with a Canon XTi and I'm very happy with. The only thing you'll discover on both these cameras is that the built in flash is kind of weak.
So plan on dropping another $300-400 on an external adjustable flash to get good lighting.

400D. I Bought mine earlier this year ... and I have crested into a new world of photography. It truly is a great camera on all levels. Great to get your hands wet in the DSLR world. Canon knows what they are doing and I find their products amazing. Been using Canon for some time ... so I am just a fan boy. The Nikon vs Canon battle is a silly one. Both companies make great cameras and len(s) ... Just pick either Ford or Chevy.
- dibec0
Yes. I have three so far.
Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM (Walking Lens)
Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM (Wide Angle)
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens (Macro)I shoot a lot with the 28-135 ... just a great lens and I am very happy with it. I have shot a slow 1/30 and the image came out perfect with IS (Image Stabilization). Just an amazing lens.

it's the wizard, not the wand...
this wizard happens to use nikon
- dibec0
You have not watched Harry Potter have you ...
- lvl_130
is it because he has a small wand, that he chooses to use a nikon?
just kidding! the canon vs. nikon battle is on the same lines as mac vs. pc.
i use a canon, and my shots suck. so there you go.
- flashbender0
^^ hey now, I have a Nikon and my wand is enormous!
I wouldn't say your shots suck - they're just not very good
:D
I kid, I kid - about the pics part, the wand part is undeniably true.

shoulda known this was going in the gutter quick.. this is qbn after all!
both make great images, but i think in low light situations, canon may have an edge with lower noise. still researching it myself, but i have images captured with my Nikon D70 and a Canon 20D of the same low light event and same ISOs. the canon was clearly the less noisier of the two.
something to consider

Shoot film!

If you have to shoot digital.. bust out the D3 or D300... much better then the Canon's...
(or shoot film!)

i can't speak about the nikons, but i can illuminate a little about the canons. the sensor in the 400d is near the same as the 40d's - so i wouldn't spend the extra to upgrade to a 40d unless you plan on taking a lottt of pictures or really want the faster processor/extra features. the money saved could go to a nice lens or flash.
that being said, the consumer-level canon dslr's have a shutter rated at 10,000 actuations, which is very easy to go over if you shoot a lot. my digital rebel's af mirror locked up at about 20k clicks - now it's a manual-focus only affair :) my 30d is still going strong at around the same number of shots.
the key is, don't overspend! the used market for digital slr's is very very strong, so if you ever feel like you need to upgrade, you won't lose your initial investment.

go for a d300
(you only live once)- gotten a chance to use your much yet?jaylarson
- a bit--I really like it. I dig the new 14-24 as well!Randd
- the 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8 are all on my list. it sounds like it is best to stick with pro lenses if possiblejaylarson
- I have the 70-200 2.8 as well--fantastic. I skip the middle range, because I think the extremes create more dynamic picturesRandd

- thanks randd. or is it randy? strange new name. and thanks for the tip about creating more dynamic images.jaylarson
- it's not really my tip--I read it on thom hogan's website. But it makes sense if you think about itRandd
- thanks for the name-drop. it sounds familiar too. wow. he's got a buch o' stuff on his site!jaylarson

from DP Review forums:
"I have downloaded the test samples from Image Resource's low light test. This test starts at a light level about equivalent to typical city street lighting at night (1 foot-candle) 11lux and goes down to 0.67lux (1/16 foot-candle). There are D300 samples from the lowest light level at 0.67lux without High ISO NR (filenames with XNR in the end). The D300 literally wipes the floor with the 40D both regarding noise and details, and there is a difference of at least 1 stop in favour of the D300. This is evaluated without High ISO Noise Reduction, from ISO400 and up."

i must protest! all y'all sound like car salesmen! he was asking about cameras that cost $500-$600.
guy 1: "hi, i'm looking for an economy car... something decent... i'm thinking of the focus or the cobalt..."
salesman 1: "economy cars! pah! you need to buy the DeLuxo 5000 GTR! you get leather from 10 different kinds of cows, 25" wheels and six turbos!"
salesman 2: "DeLuxo 5000 is crap! the SuperPremio 4500SS is better! it has a built in back massager *and* the windshield is bigger! You'll never go back once you go SuperPremio!"- hahahaRandd
- My bad.. I thought it was just a Nikon or Canon question...

also from dpreview....
The D40X does well to maintain detail levels at higher sensitivities despite increased noise reduction, perhaps not quite as good as the Canon EOS 400D but better than the Olympus E-410....
don't spend to much time ready those reviews. splitting hairs and chasing tails......
- sikma0
at the end of the day if you layed prints from both cameras on a table you would VERY hard pressed to see a difference in image quality.
i would worry more about how the camera feels in your hand than what the noise looks like at 1600.
