if noise is a issue for you, which ever you choose, save up for a fast, whip ass lens to make the most of your investment.
a D300 won't do ya now good with crappy glass in front of it.
- Raniator0
Ok, so it's looking like the Canon then?
The kit lense that comes with the Canon is supposed to be crap, is that always the case or is the lense that comes with the Nikon better?
Also, the Nikon has no lens motor in body. Does that really matter? Are AF-S/AF-I lenses loads more money?
- Also the fact that the 400D is nearly 18 months old bugs me slightly. Am I being a snob?Raniator

canon 400d is small in a very uncomfortable way if your hands are any bigger than a child's. Big disadvantage of both is the lack of inbody image stabiliser and effective dustbust system. You might want to also check out the Olympus e510 or perhaps the Pentax k100d/K10d or Sony Alpha. There is much more than just Nikon and Canon you know... don't blindly follow the company with the biggest marketing budget.

Oh, and you should tell us for what you intend to use the camera, that will help us advice you.calcio - agreed about the comfort - canon digital rebel xt/xti with a big lens and a shoemount flash gets uncomfortable quickly.bigtrick
- agreed, the 400d can be very awkward in the hands--the grip is just too small.Cultr

Your ___________ camera is the best.

Raniator - the kit lens, despite allegations by everyone repeating what they read, is NOT crap. it is slow, yes, and the autofocus is also lethargic. however, stopped down sufficiently, the sharpness difference between it and an L lens cannot be discerned with an 8-megapixel dslr. this is something i've discovered for myself, having owned both the kit lens and a 17-40mm f4 L.
value for money, the kit lens and the 50mm f1.8 prime are the two best canon lenses you can buy.

From my limited experience, I've found Canons to be very fiddly to use, next to Nikons which seem to be generally more sturdy...
- tkmeister0
yeah, nikon is known for their handling quality. well built and feels good when you hold. that's one thing never changed in their SLR line up.

doesnt the D40/D40x have limited controls/functionality?
D40/D40x < 400D
400D < D80
D80 < 40D
40D < D300
then it starts to get complicated.I shoot find nikon to be a bit more expensive generally but nikon does have a better flash system than canon. Canon has a slightly larger lens range and seems to be marginally better in the consumer range of cameras at high ISOs in regards to detail if you are a full on pixel peeper. I shoot canon because I just prefer the lenses. I would be happy shooting nikon too. Their cameras are kick ass.
Between the d40 and 400D, I would definately go the 400D.

Got yourself a D40x or D300. D3 is still very expensive and you need very fine glass to go with that.
The D40x kit is better than the 400D, the glass included is an overall good performer. D40x its bigger than 400D as a camera, feeling a lot better when you hold it.
Yeah, you will need to buy only AF-S lenses to have auto-focus, but you can buy a consumer camera if you need auto-focus.At least for starters, buy the D40x kit, a tripod, Speedlite blitz-er snitzer and a 80mm lens. You can spend up to $1500 for these, I guess. But look on eBay for lenses. You can find very good deals there.
Good luck!
p.s. Yeah, D40x is better in quality than 400D in any conditions. TRY to shoot ISO1600 with Canon in the night and see what happens :P
Overall, see reviews on both on dpreview.com, but go for the Nikon. It is simply a better camera.- Thanks for that, good advice. Having slept on it I'm swaying towards the D40x now...Raniator

Thanks guys... that's some good advice right there.
Checking out eBay at the moment, bidding on a 400D twin lens kit – if I win that on my current bid or maybe a few quid more it'll be a bargain... if not I'm gonna go for the D40x...
I am one indecisive mo'fo.
From what I can gather from reading reviews and collating other info, there isn't much between them... I'm hardly pro or even that experienced so some of the differences mean very little to me.
Either camera is going to make a world of difference compared to my pocket-point-and-shoot Sony DSC-T1 so I'll be happy with either one...
Thanks for your input guys – I've said this before but it's these sort of intelligent and useful responses that keep me coming back...

this is where more you do research, more you get confused. i spent a good 3months before i bought a D80 last year. now i want the new D300 really bad. it won't stop you there. you'll start spending more on accessories, flash, lenses, studio equipments, software and the list goes on. it's a really expensive hobby.
- Raniator0
Ah, balls... the twat on eBay doesn't accept PayPal (who doesn't these days?!)... hmm... shall I just toss a coin and be done with it?!
- nicnichols0
Ran.. you gotta hold out for the Nikon.. you'll thank yourself in the end..
- danthon0
I have a d300 and if you plan to get serious a used d200 would be a great place to start. You really can't go wrong these days with any mid-range Nikon or canon. I held out for the last 5 years with a fuji s2 pro and I can still crank out awesome images with it. The main thing is to not limit yourself with a low end camera that only takes low end glass and has limited functions. Even though the fuji was outdated, there was not much it could not do it terms of function. The d40 is a toy.
- A toy? I'd hardly class it as that?!Raniator
- if I had to choose between a decent point and shoot that could save raw and a d4o. I would go for the point and shoot like the Canon G9danthon
- shoot like the Canon G9. Anything that is bigger than my pocket had better be worth packing a camera bagdanthon
- So would you class the 400D as a toy?Raniator
- I have never shot with a 400d so I am not aware of its limitations. I have shot with a d40. My research ended when i got the d300. too busy shoooting ;-)danthon
- got the d300. too busy shoooting ;-)danthon
- i have to disagree with danthon. don't limit yourself by buying a high end camera and end up not having enough $$ for lenses! the d40x does have an af drive in the body so you won't be limited by lens choice at all.bigtrick
- ... for lenses! the d40x does have an af drive in the body so you won't be limited by lens choice at all.bigtrick
- unless something has changed in the last 2 months. There is no af drive.danthon

D80, 40D or D300?
Just starting, but want to get to quality photos (for specific business purposes, not just a hobby).
Image stabilization and live view make the 40D and D300 more attractive
age of D80 makes it less attractive
cost of D80 makes it much more attractive...just rambling, but I do need to buy something in the next few weeks...any thoughts?
- danthon0
MBR. The live view on the d300 is only really good for tripod shooting if this helps your decision.
On a side note. I must say the battery life of the D300 is amazing. I do not use auto focus too much, but I got close to 700 raw 14bit images from one charge.
- danthon, how you liking it?
I dig mine a lotRandd - Randd. I must say that shooting ISO 800 with no flash is like having ten birthdays all at once. I am stoked on the d300!
http://static.zooomr…danthon - first week with the D300
http://static.zooomr…danthon - whoa--nice. I'm even liking the film-like grain at 1250Randd
