i tend to charge £250/day (which isnt much for freelance)
so most easy branding projects go for 500-750.. (logo generation + V.rudimentary palette, & guideline)
(on the other hand i dont get many big projects freelance) so when i get them through i work on them for real cheap just cause i like the indepth-ness (?) of it. and the amout of stuff i get to do.
so.. i work on a mate's rates kinda system..
some stuff i just do for free :D
answer to your ur qestion. 750

skt's responses are the best in this thread by far
even if somehow by some chance miracle you are done with this in hours to your, their, and the publics approval, the final output is worth thousands as it will become the face, nay the essence of said shoppe

project cost should be high
they are depending on you to create something appealing to help draw in and maintain customers. this should be less of a logo and more a graphic standard
royalties for materials emblazoned with your work etc...

I think a lot of people who start out with an interest in branding – that are working independently and not inside a branding firm or agency that specializes in branding – tend to begin by costing brand work like all other projects. Certainly there is no problem operating that way (save the people really undermining the market, though likely they're not in the same league) however you're certainly underselling your services if you do have some competency.

just make it small and charge again for larger

Thanks, letters2 - I'm acutely aware of all of those issues, which is exactly why I was asking.
The branding jobs I'm currently on appear to be massively undervalued - I realise this now.
Just hold on, whilst I go get a shotgun.

Also, as a note of caution, work done for friends can be the most difficult in terms of cost/coordination, as when you begin being more flexible in your costing and management of the project the client can easily take advantage (not necessarily knowingly).

Typically, compensation for branding work is not at hourly or per diem rates. The application of the brand to collateral or environmental materials could be charged based upon time – but the actual brand itself should be priced differently. The cost for the brand should be dependent on who the client is, in terms of their offering, revenue and in what regions/areas the brand will operate. Brands ideally continue to generate profit and have extended value beyond their date of conception – this is why rights management is involved in the sale of branding work. You could charge for the brand work based upon your time, but ultimately when you transfer the rights of the brand over to the client there should be a fee involved.

Oh wrinkled, vinegary Holy Balls.
I last freelanced full-time about 5 years ago, but thought I'd done a check earlier this year, only to find that rates hadn't changed much.
I'm right in the middle of quite a big job, and I've set my rate at £30. ffs. No wonder they were surprised at how cheap I was.
FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
I HATE THIS SHIT.I'm only bloody in this bloody freelancing charade 'til I get my shit sorted out and start a non-design business - something where I can sell an easily quantifiable service and distinct goods which I can easily copy market rates for.
I'm such a schmo. I should've been a scientist.
Thanks guys!

You can still sell web for higher than most anything [save motion or animation gigs] but yeah, you'd be wise to go with the number Baskerville gave..
that said, if it is a friend, you are the only one who could really know what price is right...
- well, if there's one thing that disappoints me most, in terms of effort/reward it is web work.9832892398

£25-30 an hour is pretty cheap.
I'd say more like £30-40.But maybe you can do a deal where you get £25-30 an hour but a card for free baked products/coffee for a year or something!
- skt0
fucksake nairn, i charge £50ph for shitty web work. more for branding. you are selling yourself well short.
i'm not even a graphic designer.

Thanks, NONEIS.
Around £25-30 an hour is what I'd normally charge for this kind of thing.
But ..and this entirely depends on how this pans out.. if I get the job finished in 16 hours, that's 'only' £400, which won't account for research time.
And as a greedy bastard *I* don't get out of bed for less than a couple of sausage rolls and a meat pie!
erm. ho hum.

"Fair" is fully dependent on your experience and past sucess' doing exactly what you are offering. Just don't charge less than $50 / hour, thats the minimum "Fair" amount in my book, unless the project has serious intrinsic value or you are best pals, which you said you are not, removed twice right?
Factor in your utility bills, your rent (for home or studio, wherever you do this), the paper you are going to use printing out comps, the ink in the printer etc, you have to take care of those things too.

Thanks, Baskerville - all good questions.
I've got a meeting with her next week to go through the exact nature, but yes the job I want to price up currently consists of at least the logotype and overall identity. I presume that'll then lead on to design work for menus, ads, packaging application to frontage, etc, but given that she'd (and I'd, as it happens) prefer recyclable, low maintenance packaging, it probably means just menu and frontage branding work.
I like the day/job rate thinking - because, research aside (which I never know how to cost), I can envisage this being quite a quick turnaround.
Would anyone share what they think is a fair hourly rate for branding work? That's a nosy question, so I'll understand if no one answers.

£2000 minimum.

you said it was doable over a few days right?
I would probably go ahead and charge him the 20K that you mentioned over in my thread, but my guess is he won't pay more than 500 P.
That being said, what is the largest amount of money that you can charge your friend of a friend twice-removed and still sleep well at night.~12 - 20 hrs? x hourly rate, always round up.

15 poe-tat-ohs...

when you say identity what do you mean? Just a logo? A whole system, typeface colour palette, look & feel.
All their print materials: packaging, menus etc?I'd charge per day, or it you think it won't take that long, by hour.
In these kind of cases sometimes it's better to negotiate a decent print budget so you can get some nice work out of it for the folio. Plus a chichi london bakery will want some pretty swanky packaging, print work
