oh and I also have this $30 chinese replica rolex daytona my parents gave me last year. One of their neighbors goes to china 10 times a year and brings them back. And my mom thought it was a good deal. Funny thing is, the movement is actually a pretty good copy. The chrono don't work for shit and the band broke when I dropped it (they had to bend the pin to get it in) and I can't get it back together. But, for 30$ its a decent copy.
I'm used to the crown now, but at first, I was like damn, this hurts, almost started wearing it on the right wrist

These are controversial but the ingenuity is undeniable.

(Nov 1 07, 06:09)Jebus £25,000 ?!?

^ yes.
i have the band kit as well. good to hear about that crown- i was wondering id the wind-lock would dig it a bit. interesting.
they are indeed 2x price as they are completely ceramic crown. so sick. pre-owned are great, but new is cool as well.
ever been to the Panerai boutique in Firenze? so awesome. it is this tiny little store in the center of old-center and just rad.

the 292 comes out this month and I think they are all sold. =( plus they are about 2x the price of a normal radiomir.
the crown is the only think I don't like about wearing the 183, digs in sometimes. if I get a new pam it will have the swan neck crown for sure.
And yeah, you can get different straps. I've got 3 different for mine, the tan that it comes with, a brown sharkskin and I got a dk. brown suede a few months ago.
I don't really view them as an investment, but, they don't drop in value to much. Unless you buy new. then you take the first hit. Pre-owned all the way

(Nov 1 07, 05:44)I had the exact same watch. It ruled. So many functions: calcultor, world time, phone book, schedule. It did more than most early mobile phones.
Maybe I'll buy another one and relive my childhood.

Casio 1980's calculator watch with world time. The ipod of it's day.

i remember i got it for my birthday and i was so excited to show it off at school......unfortunately some bastard kid broke his arm on his dirtbike on the weekend and took away all the attention from my brand new watch
i tried to get everybody excited about it the next day, but it was too late

heh, I saw your 'classic 1950' design immediately after I posted, so figured I'd be a bit out.
They are beautiful though - I've seen the ads crop up in the Economist and National Geographic 'recently', so wondered whether it was an old brand revived, or whether it'd always existed as a watch co.

yeah, but the crown of the 00292 is the classic 1950 design- a classic. you can retrofit w/ rubber band as well. it is an option to purchase the band kit.

(Nov 1 07, 05:37)a classic indeed! i like it, and i think it looks great on that model but it's a personal touch that i would prefer...for myself, that is.

they have been building timepieces since 1860. not too new to the scene...

Those Panerai are gorgeous - that black one especially. Are they a new-ish brand? I've only seen them advertised over the past few years.
I'm such a tight-wad though - I'd have to be a millionaire many times over before I'd even consider spending more than a few hundred quid on a watch or any other decorative jewellery - I just think... well, it's a bit ostentatious, isn't it?
So do I consider watches an investment? No - they're just 'things'.

the PAM00292 (black seal 45) has been tempting me as well...
madirish
(Nov 1 07, 05:30)hehehe i was just about to say that! man i dig all black watches. Although i prefer the other panerai crown and would like to see this with a rubber also...just lke the ones they currently have.
