There is no contradiction between the words of the Torah and the New Testament. The latter is the fulfillment of the former, and a full understanding of the two creates a richer knowledge of God's nature and purpose for us.

(Oct 15 07, 13:39)See...it's when I get into arguments with the guy who tells me the bible says (in the old testament) that gays are evil while he's munching on a pork po boy bugs me. And I say, you know, the old testament says you're not supposed to eat pork and I always get - oh well Jesus fulfilled the law so we don't have to pay attention to that."
And I say "Oh. I see..."
Pick and choose. Convenient, no?

It's a literal interpretation and, like Dobs said, is usually confused by it's believers as fact because they don't understand the intention of the original author.

(Oct 15 07, 13:59)Um. No.
It is not.
The whole thing is taken in context. One passage is weighed against another. It is of the UTMOST importance to understand the intent of the original author.
My opinions on Biblical interpretation are bolstered by years of studying the Bible and the theological delvings of men and women much smarter than me – handed down and refined through hundreds of years of research, praxis and practice.
I don't just buy blindly into whatever I am told. I weigh it carefully, doubt it, think about it, debate it with people who are smarter than me, and live it out to test it.
Stop lumping me in with the fundamentalist idiots who don't give a shit about context or history. They are the ones who refuse to get involved in culture, who have no interest in knowing people, who are obsessed with rules and forget all about love. I have plenty weaknesses on display, but I sure as hell don't hail from the fundie camp.
I don't believe all this stuff because of some jack-ass inbred notions that I have never questioned, I believe it because of the many lessons I have l learned the hard way, and the years of subsequent study.
But you know what...at the end of the day, I really don't know much at all. I'm 28 years old and though I grew up on the church, I've only been living it since I was about 24.
So in other words trust the Bible before you trust anything I say. In spite of how much I talk (I know I am verbose to say the least)...

honest enough, good for you. but its not for everyone and no amount of proselytizing changes that unless you are convincing yourself. The humbleness, well, that's just aggression under another guise. Why say anything at all? because you mean to convince those less than you.
I come with a sword and all that in Matthew 10:34or betterv yet, from the discredited Gospel of Thomas: 'Split the stick and there you will find jesus"
If there is love it is perverted and no amount of prelapsarian pining is going to change the long bloody history of the christians on earth.
- TheBlueOne0
Capsize: +2 for using "prelapsarian" in a sentence

i don't blame christians or christianity for "bloody history". history is a little more complicated then that. Also I wouldn't go on the "you just beleive and have faith that it's true rather than a reason" when most people arn't religious for the truth values so much as the community, culture, support, belonging...being born that way...and beleive it or not for commpassion and a desire to help others indicriminatly. INlcuding a legit faith and knowledge of God or their spirituality in their lives. Two often these very true and imporatant aspects of religion are trivialsed by secular minds.
- mrdobolina0
not really trivialized, I just don't like it when something that is taboo to question is used to tell people how to live.
- Mimio0
Gramme you seem to forget that Judaism, Islam, and other Christian sects who have the same texts in common (Torah/Pentateuch) also have theological scholarship, and they don't share your interpretation.
