consumer items for designers are passe-- consumer items for their toy dogs are where it's at

the graphics are all nice. i mentioned that already.
i guess i am on the total opposite side of the fence than everyone else. it seems a great lot is bashing blanka for what ever reason while the others are jsut making jokes.
i wish gradiate luck, as well as the other designers on this project.
i just felt his words needed to be adjusted.
take that how each of you want.

this thread seemed to be based on a lot of assumptions

This thread is not helping the environment!

If I say "I've designed a t-shirt" I certainly don't mean that I cut the material stitched and shit
jeez, talk about pedantics (sp?)

But don't you think edd-e makes a intresting point (speaking as someone who designs bags) the bag appears to have compromised it's durability for the sake of the graphics adorned on them!
But I guess my issue (having read the Blanka synopsis) is with this huge fanfare required to announce it's arrival! I mean sell it yes, and I do hope all 250 limited editions of each bag sell and people use them for years, and the idea of re-use and recycle become second nature, but do we need to see them in a gallery and buy the catalogue to support the event, which takes me back to my original point Blanka are using their skill (by knowing their market) to appeal to the collectable nature of the graphic designer!

The question is: what is a bag?
.-)
- Dancer0
Yeah the bag cost fuck all to produce (£3 each?) and they are selling it for a premium which you would hope means you get a premium quality bag.
You are right with the fact that it is all a little jumped up. If it is for the environment then I wonder how much CO2 will be produced from people communting there, production of the book and all the hot air produced at the opening show by the big wigs.
Having said that I do like some of the bag designs (GRAPHICS that is) but do feel it's only there to feed the designer frenzy. If build did a bag I imagine it would go for a premium on ebay. If there is a market feed it. I for one am not hungary

in a way I think e-pill's ire illustrates something quite pertinent in this context, that design for a lot of us graphics guys is a purely surface based thing, its what we most associate the term with when in fact the design process (certainly where it applies to a product or object like these bags) is a far deeper and more intrinsically collaborative affair which we tend to ignore unintentionally in our language. In this case it IS very relevant as the graphics should really be tool to promote and educate on the fundamentally sustainable nature of the manufacture and production of the bag itself. Points about its limited edition etc are relevant to this also.
on the original issue, I think there is a kind of saturation point we've reached with these cool graphic objects for cool graphically aware people that grates with some of us. It usually leaves me a bit cold, but I will admit that when its very very good, it still grabs me by the old consumerist trendoid goolies, mainly it dissnae though.
I'm now mentally tired. I hope you're pleased with yourself 'pill ;)

Sometimes I wanna kiss you kelpie.
The point with the bag is an interesting one but I really don't think gradiate was insinuating anything other that the fact he did the graphics
- gradiate0
Just to clarify.
-
The bag show was organised by Progress who also designed and made the bag, and yes I mean designed. The handles go here, in this fabric etc.
-
The bag graphics were done by 15 designers for no money and just an example of their bag.
-
Blanka is just selling a few, you can also buy them at other stockists. Just like you can buy shoes in store made by other people. The did not organise or put the show on.
-So assumptions cleared up and semantics put to bed. You don't like them? Fine but hating for hatings sake, leave it.
- kelpie0
oh yeah, I totally don't think gradiate deserved to be ripped quite so badly there.
bad e-pill, baaad e-pill, nae biccies for e-pill
