Yes, so let's die laughing maniacally.
We are truly fucked though, I increasingly have fewer and fewer doubts of that. Even if we could resolve all these dogmatic policy disputes - we'd still be facing global warming, we'd still be facing over production and consumption - we'd still be facing the prospect of gross over population (and the terrifying 'solutions' to that problem).
Don't even get me started on asteroid impact unpreparedness and celebrity TV.

(Sep 24 07, 21:24)I'm probably going to get called out as anti-semitic, or something, but shouldn't the masses be wary of exactly this kind of purportedly balanced article? It's written by someone of Israeli Jewish heritage and although 90% is seemingly quite balanced and informative, ultimately it leaves the answer unfulfilled in the negative, framed in such a way that we are left suspicious of Iran's motives anyway.
I hate trying to be reasonable - at heart, I'd rather have a strong Israel than fundamentalist nut-job Muslims, but I don't want that to come at the expense of the mores and values of all that 'Western Civiliation' has supposedly strived for.
Don't jump on me - //Some of my best friends are jews and Yentl's one of my favourite movies

I don't know what to think anymore - but Iranian culture is not just Islam. In fact, the Persians are the grandfathers of Europe.

(Sep 25 07, 02:56)but it's not about the jews, it's all about the israeli gov't. there are lots of iranian jews living quite happily in iran, and they, to the chagrin of israel, absolutely refuse to denounce iran and will not leave for any price, and yes, israel has offered them money to do so. jews are also OVER-represented in the iranian gov't.

Yeah, I appreciate that - but my feeling is that pointing our where where conflicts of interest lie in regards to Israel and Zionism equates directly to anti-semitism in many people's minds.
Which is a shame, considering that my perception of Judaism is a respectful one, hinged on a belief that it is fundamentally a philosophy of questioning.

my view on this topic of zionism vs judaism:
I'm jewish, but I'm not a zionist, but I can see how the two are basically linked. What's annoying is that you can be jewish and not be a zionist, people don't see to be able to separate the two when they need to.I agree that the UN was right to create the state of israel, the jewish people have had a pretty bad time over the last few centuries and deserve a place to live BUT I don't agree with how it's been handled since it's creation. I now despise the israeli government, their beligerence etc.
There are plenty of other races/peoples round the world who have been victimised and had genocide pushed on them who still don't have their own country, you'd think israel of all places would see how lucky it is and appreciate it.
Being anti israel is not being anti jewish, plenty of other faiths live in israel too (and get along fine for the most part)

-------------At least he's got the Balls to do this!!
Could you imagine Bush agreeing to and standing up in front of an educated crowd in Iran/Iraq and answering questions on his policies and views.
Think it would have to be even MORE entertaining than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad getting grilled like that.

Touché, Witt.
More often than not - no, sadly.
I don't truck with no religion, I just kind've dig Jewish philosophy.

nevermind. i have absolutely nothing against Israel but when your saying the jews had a bad time and "deserve" a country you're creating a bad precedent. One day it will the be Incas, the Sioux, the Inuit, the Kurds (? why not really, they've had a bad time too), Tibetans (why not, they're actually good people)... Israel got a country because they have a lot of money, not because their cause is better than anyone else's. And that's what's hindering the whole matter from the beginning. False justifications.
- Nairn0
oh shit. i'm such a retard, i thought Witt's question was aimed at me.
how the hell?
solipsist.
- Witt0
anyway - I feel uncomfortable talking about these matters: there's much I don't know.
- BaskerviIle0
Israel was created as a jewish state, as there was no other jewish state, it's still the only one. There are plenty of muslim countries. Jews wanted a country where they wouldn't be presecuted.
I don't think you can say the same thing about islam.
I was talking about the division between religion and nationality, the problem with israel is that the two are pretty muddled up.
- Witt0

(Sep 25 07, 05:25)'solipsist': that's one word I always forget the meaning of. As wendell would say that's funny the brain of me.
