anybody have any cheat sheets for katakana and hiragana character sets on computers that aren't running Japanese support systems... something to help me from stumbling through looking for characters on an english-only keyboard?

eh? eh?

just walk the street and ask any jockboy to take their shirt off...i'm sure you could wrangle up the entire set via shitty tattoos...
i'm no help, sorry :)

well any response is better than no response... so yeah, I know the hiragana and katakana character sets, but I don't know of any logical way to key in the characters I want on an English keyboard. Option, shift, blah blah blah. There should be a consistent way to key in the various sillables, but I can't track down any reasonable resource

Don't think that'll help but there...
there really isn't a way to just press a key and get a japanese syllable. Japanese people use asian text input editors like that one called IME for pcs to be able to type in japanese, but you still have to type letters that get converted to japanese syllables.
Anyway, I don't even think I understood what you tried to say.
Sorry :o)

hey man, thanks – that's almost it. to clarify:
If I'm in Illustrator, and I have a Katakana typeface loaded up, and I want to type the Katakana characters for "ka-ta-ka-na", are there any key-stroke cheat sheets for how to punch in "ka" etc. If any of you have banged around with Katakana typefaces on an English keyboard, you know you can generate most (all) characters with various combinations of shift, option, and English letters. So maybe shift option 'L' would give you the Japanese Katakana character for 'ra'. I'm looking for a logical way to typeset in Katakana without having to gear up with a Japanese keyboard.

OK, this is getting me somewhere... looks like there might be a built-in method on Mac OSX:

Has anybody dealt with/solved this challenge before?

check the right hand side. it's spelled out in japanese right under where it says katakana.

tkmeister, thanks for the response, and sorry for the confusion... but I know the katakana and hiragana character sets. I'm studying Japanese, and I have those character sets down. I just need to find a shortcut for typing the characters on an English keyboard, using a Katakana typeface.

if you are on mac,
system preference > international > input menu
then check kotoeri input menu.
i think if you are on a pc, it has a very similar set up.
- blastofv0
word, thanks man. I have to get that kotoeri bit together and try it out. thanks!

In OSX, I went 'Show Character Palette' and View Japanese. Then Katakana and Hirigana are listed, and you can select characters and insert...
- blastofv0
cool, that's a really thorough resource, thanks for the tip ribit
but I'm finding that although I can now type the english 'k' and 'a' in Japanese Katakana mode (and it comes out as the Katakana 'ka' character - awesome), I'm NOT able to then convert that to one of the more stylized Katakana typefaces that I have in FontExplorer. It only works with the Mac OSX system Japanese font sets.
Hm.

Welcome to the world of foreign languages buddy.
it sucks sometimes.

I think...I understand.
You got a set of -just- hiragana/katakana fonts. In other words, you don't type them out you just hit for example "t" for "ka".Is that right?
In that case google an image of a Japanese keyboard.
Oooooor
Just type out the whole alphabet, low/caps. Then just copy whatever you need from there.

(Jul 17 07, 05:25)Yeah, that's about where I'm at. Of course, it would probably be an easy fix to just go buy a damn second hand Japanese keyboard.
Thanks guys.
