Hey guys, I just ordered a MBP 2.33 ghz core 2 duo and was wondering if anyone uses it exclusively. I got it so I can do work during my 1 hour commute but...
If I get an external monitor will it hold it's own or should I plan on upgrading my desktop?

yes, good choice. i have that exact or close to it.
i love the set-up and dual monitors is the best part.
max out the RAM and also plan to purchase an external hard-drive for back-up.
make sure you ordered the 'matte' screen version or outside work isnt possible with the intense glare on the glossy.
have fun!!

I've gone from a macbook (black) to a 17 inch mac book pro... i've also switched from xp to apple... and because i got the higher res one it means i only need one screen really... i'm a switcher :)

I went from a 20" Intel iMac and Black MacBook to an Intel MacBook Pro 15" with an external 20" Cinema Display and haven't looked back.

I have 15" MBP, but hook up to a 23" at work, and another 23" at home... Used to use a tower too, but great having just one computer so I've always got all the content and customised workflow stuff I need with me.

I'm about to order the 2.4MBP to replace my old iBook. Everyone says max out the ram, but it's like a 650-7XX upgrage, Think I'm just gonna upgrade it non-Apple way. 4gb is ~$400
Anyone running bootcamp or Parallel?

MacBook Pro at home and office, 20 inch at home 24 inch at work...
It very certainly doable for your desires to become mobility design man.
Although one shouldn't count out the advantages of a loaded Mac Pro.
I still miss working on my dual 2.3 G5.

blackbook + exteranal monitor, keyboard and mouse. I forget it's a laptop sometimes.

what kind of battery life are you guys getting?
- e-pill0
2 hours max if MBP is left idle, if you want to work or watch movies or something its less than 2 hours, and it goes from 25 minutes left to 0 is a few minutes...

a friend of mine switched from powerbook to mbp and says her hard drive failed when she moved it just after shutting the lid. unlike the pb it doesn't automatically go to sleep. rather it takes about 5 seconds more and records some data so it shouldn't be moved until it's done. you can hear the lil whirrrr when it's doing it.
they should be explicit with this kind of information .. don'tchathink?

I ran into problems hot-swapping batteries when not on mains power with a MacBookPro... took me a while to work out you need to put it to sleep, wait for the light to start throbbing (meaning its finished writing to disk), then its safe to swap batteries and wake it up.
Applecare tech guy didn't even know you could do hot-swap on MBP (essential to me as I had a 400MB GoLive site file that took like 20 minutes to load if I had to shut down)
Whole process was a lot faster on Powerbooks actually, some things got worse on MBP..

actually the hard-drive failing after move isn't a 'known problem' is it?
I've only had my MBP crash or be semi-awake (really hot with fans going mad) after throwing it in a bag when not fully put to sleep...

too bad that after one of the tiger updates they removed the option to start up the macbook in 1GHz mode. This was a good battery saver.

Got the MBP 2.4 ghz and 30 inch cinema display for home last week. I'm definitely not disappointed at all, but wished it was easier to initiate close lid mode.
Now working out how to afford CS3 to see the full gain.

how do you initiate closed lid mode? I thought it was pretty easy..

depends on the sort of work you do and your patience level, I reckon. my MBP works in a pinch when I need to do mobile computing, but doesn't hold a candle to my macpro at home and at work. makes me think i should downgrade to a macbook

I have a 15" 2.16 Duo 2 with 3GB of ram and use it full time with a 24" Dell. Rock it.
