hahahaha that was quite a controversial image we used to brand our biggest photo fair... our catalogue had it printed right smack bleed on the cover. some people didnt even want to hold it..we gave them out free with ticket purchase.
the albino is a teenage girl from south africa named Wonderful, btw

seriously, i would take this as a great opportunity to create something interesting. they have very minimal content, want a redesign and they just set you loose on it? you should be excited!
look at the work of talented designers (like many here) and start brainstorming. go completely out of the box, in it, around it. this is really a great opportunity.

hehe, yeah don't stress about it too much. it should be something that is fun and a good opportunity.
but i know what you mean when they don't give you ANY direction...it can be overwhelming

+++++++++++++++++
fuck - do you tackle all of your projects like that? - you have freedom - run with it.
- -sputnik-0
was thinking the same thing, bullet. if it has been made very clear that there is no direction (but you know the client), what's the problem? go nuts! present 3 totally different designs...a reserved/minimalist one, a slightly edgy/funky one and one you absolutely must be drunk to have created.
- JG_LB0
yeah no doubt!
ive made allllll types trust me. i've been working on this for months now [no joke] months! they cant pick one. they cant pick anything...its the worst thing ive ever had to do as a designer.i know this must reflect bad on me. which is completely understandable but really, its not my fault. ive created some good shit. they just dont know what the fuck theyre doing

another way to look at this might be that you want to take a step back and focus on the true art direction, if you want to be an 'art director'... or whatever.
my point is, develop the concept and basis for your design aesthetic before you start 'designing'. close illy, pshop, flash and sketch out concepts by hand, or with whatever tool set allows you to loose yourself. along side this, take notes of ideas you woudl like both expressed, and realized. these can form the basis of a creative brief and the AD statement that you can work from and serve as an artifact to review with your client as to why you did what you did.
AD is tough and not having direction is the entire goal if you want to be one. but, more important, is not just throwing shit on the wall, but being able to defend and critique why you threw certain pieces and of certain viscosity.
i would be stoked if i were you. these types of projects are rare IMO.
- -sputnik-0
right on madirish...they are rare. i'd much prefer no direction or a hands-off client than the micromanaging, hands-on doofus who thinks i should use a green colour scheme because he heard that was a good colour at some cocktail party

I just checked the page, and wasnt too sure which button to click
it would already be an improvement, to give the visitor an idea of what the website is about.
in the first page. and if the site is split in 3 sections, maybe a quick way of knowing whats in them, without having to click.
also, when you go to say 'photo LA', there is no way back!!!!
