i heard a rumor about a DVD release with a 'pick your own ending' kind of thing... so everyone will be happy.
meh.. i'm not happy

While I loved the episode and the final song I think that the ending was a disgrace to the fans.
Making you think something big was going to happen and then cutting to black so abruptly was so weak. For a long time fan that was such a disappointment.

It's nice that they turned the finale into a DVD marketing scheme.

(Jun 10 07, 19:13)Me too!
I was about to rage.
But about the ending being shit - I disagree. The fuel that the show ran on was tension. My wife and I we're more freaked during the last moments of the show than any stupid horror movie or suspense film we'd seen in some time. It was a fun last gasp, and ultimately an ending that said that it recognized what it had done for you for 6 seasons (for the fans that is).
It kept you guessing. It left you speculating.
I think most of the "fans" of The Sopranos will appreciate that.
I for one thought it was pretty satisfying.

It was pretty weak ending, we were shocked, thought the feed went out too.
If anything, all the did was create the symbolism of them always never knowing what was around the corner.
The two guys that came into the restaurant, we thought they might kill Tony and his family, OR that they were FBI guys there to arrest him.
I honestly thought Meadow would walk in and see her father killed.
But the ending to a blank screen I think was to show you that Tony will always be in suspense of what could happen to him.
If a movie is planned down the road, they could do it about him finally getting busted by the Feds.
But horrible, horrible ending in some ways. Too many loose ends not tied up. Too much to wonder about.

Someone on the Sopranoland messageboard had this to say about the ending:
"Um - we got the answer, we got the "end", as death is the ultimate ending.
He's dead, he did not hear "the one that got him".
The screen went blank, as T went dark. He was shot."
Hadn't thought of it that way, but if that happened then I'd be satisfied in some ways, but we could have used a little more clarity to the whole thing.

OK.
I can see that a mobster's life doesn't just come to an explosive conclusion just 'cause the series ends.
Fine.
Still, pullin' out early like that makes the balls blue!

Who were Tony's enemy's at that point and who would know he was at that restaurant?
- seed0
They are excellent at creating tension and either using it to lead to something or completely diffusing it. The only reason I would have to believe they were killed is that Meadow wasn't there for the killing because she was the only one who didn't deserve it morally.
Other than that why would I be led to believe someone would be there to kill him?

seed - chances are Phil could have still had associates that are loyal to him. He was killed in front of his wife, the tire crushing his skull was an accident, but there's no chance of an open casket funeral with his head destroyed - that is a big insult.
There could have been people loyal to him that would just say "Fuck it, Tony Soprano goes and so does his family."

Maybe Meadow just had a hard time parking.
Maybe AJ just wanted some onion rings.
Maybe Carmella wanted to have dinner with her family
Maybe Tony went home after dinner, fell asleep in his La-Z-Boy watching an old Jimmy Cagney film.
You may never know.
Then again, you don't know where you'll be or what you'll be doing 10 minutes from now.
That's what I took away from it.
It's all unpredictable. Everything. No one knows for sure.
It's your call.

Right, I agree with both of you.
