my first apt in NYC was $600/month, but I shared it with a guy who only was there one weekend a month. It was maybe 600 square feet, it was 6 floor walkup, and it was 45 minutes to work on the train.
my current apt is $2000/month, it's about 700 sq. feet, 20-30 minutes on the train, and it's in a cool place - a parking spot is another $300/month.
my lawyer friend lived 10 minutes from her work, had a nice 2 bedroom apartment, with doorman, etc. she paid $3400/month.
compare that to where you live, expensive is relative

You have to remember that the majority of New Yorkers do not live in Manhattan, but in the outerboroughs, NJ, Westchester, Long Island, etc. All of this is added into the numbers of daily commutes.
It is extremely uncomfortable and impractical to live in Manhattan making $70k/year unless you live as far north as Inwood and Washington Heights. But by that point, I wouldn't even call that Manhattan...

haha tadcautious- i know what building that is :)

(Mar 22 07, 08:10)not true at all. i make less than $70k and live in the east village quite comfortably.

granted, it's not really "comfy" but i make 30 and can swing greenpoint. the train sucks in some cases, but it's worth it all.

It's expensive to buy here. But you can live/rent reasonably well on 70k. Especially considering many ny'ers have roomies. So work that out and you'll be aight.
The cost of rent vs. what you get is what shocks a lot of people. We left a rather large place to move into our humble abode, but we do have two large bedrooms and all brand new appliances.
East side of Harlem is cheap(er-ish). But lately it has been getting pricey.
People that want to live on their own, I normally suggest finding places further uptown or the outer boros and avoid living in the main confines of the city (midtown, etc.) It can get costly.
For perspective, our place is almost 1000sq ft. 2 large bedrooms(we have a king size in our bedroom with plenty of room for side tables and dresser drawers) and we pay $1700. It's Harlem though, so you get the good the bad and the ugly.
Aside from cost of living, you can do lots of things here on the cheap. For reals.
If I can do it with two kids on the meager salary I make anyone can! *jumps in air like old school toyota commercials

the fact that no one wants to stay home in their tiny apts contributes to a lively nightlife.

(Mar 22 07, 08:34)i've only been there 4 years, but it's my friends childhood home, so he's been there since the early 70's. i'm on riverside just above 96th. i like it, 2 stops to 42nd and a nice quiet family neighborhood.

skt,
where do you live? and how many sq feet do you have? do you have a roommate?
- ********0
i live on ave c and yes, shared apt. but i have the top floor to myself and we have a private terrace.
$1300 a month
- twooh0
then you got quite a good deal. Ave. C has been having a growing number of bars, so i imagined it to be kinda rowdy during the weekends.
you're also not near any of the subway lines.
top floor, in an elevator building?
