It's expensive to buy here. But you can live/rent reasonably well on 70k. Especially considering many ny'ers have roomies. So work that out and you'll be aight.

The cost of rent vs. what you get is what shocks a lot of people. We left a rather large place to move into our humble abode, but we do have two large bedrooms and all brand new appliances.

East side of Harlem is cheap(er-ish). But lately it has been getting pricey.

People that want to live on their own, I normally suggest finding places further uptown or the outer boros and avoid living in the main confines of the city (midtown, etc.) It can get costly.

For perspective, our place is almost 1000sq ft. 2 large bedrooms(we have a king size in our bedroom with plenty of room for side tables and dresser drawers) and we pay $1700. It's Harlem though, so you get the good the bad and the ugly.

Aside from cost of living, you can do lots of things here on the cheap. For reals.

If I can do it with two kids on the meager salary I make anyone can! *jumps in air like old school toyota commercials
