You have to remember that the majority of New Yorkers do not live in Manhattan, but in the outerboroughs, NJ, Westchester, Long Island, etc. All of this is added into the numbers of daily commutes.
It is extremely uncomfortable and impractical to live in Manhattan making $70k/year unless you live as far north as Inwood and Washington Heights. But by that point, I wouldn't even call that Manhattan...
