(Mar 22 07, 08:11)it's a shame they turned the building into condos for sale, it was a great location.

RENT CONTROL.

I've lived here since 2000 as a student, as a recent grad, and as a mid-20 something. You can live here on any amount if you really want to. I would say that to live in a decent part of brooklyn with a roommate you have to make at the very very least $12/hr (after taxes) which is nothing. So to say that 70k is decent but not great is stupid. I don;t make that much and I live by myself in a nice brooklyn apartment where I have my own office and plenty of room.
PS I love brooklyn, manhattan can be a sucky place to live.

Ducks into thread, sees talk of people who pay $2k/mth rent, runs off scared at earning power of NT'ers.

i spend a little less than 20% of my income(after tax) on my rent. and i think that's pretty fair. especially considering i also save 25% of my income.
you can spend all your money and have an expensive lifestyle. or be smart and live modestly within the income.
i think a lot of people say it's so expensive here because the lifestyle they want probably requires more money because there's a huge polarization on income in nyc and you are always surrounded by people with money and you think that's what you want too.
yes, it'd be nice to live in 2000sq ft tribecca loft. be out in fab restaurant every night. but i am just an ordinary man.

i lived in a big loft in tribeca for a month.
tribeca is boring as fuck.
- tkmeister0
yeah, that's why i like it.
i don't need to be living in the center of hip and happening places and be out and about. i've done that for so many years.
i think tribecca is more relaxed. and the reason why i've live around gramarcy park for the past 5yrs is because of that.

that's what I don't get. People always say to me , you always are out and doing stuff. Like what? What are you doing you can't do anywhere else?
- Tara0
yeah but it's only the people posting with rent stabilized apt's. in fact they are very rare

a lot of those people live with extended family who all work several jobs.
material
(Mar 22 07, 06:55)That actually makes a lot of sense. I have quite a lot of relatives in Toronto who do that, and can afford a huge house that way.
- clepe0
Because you live an hour out of the city, + you work 2 jobs. IN return you have no life, and spend half your day commuting on a train!
Hence - Artists Designer live in.... Brooklyn, Queens New Jersey!

what's so bad about Harlem? i used to hear stupid naive rumors like "white guys cant live in harlem w/o getting shot" but im sure thats far from the truth.. right?
so.. whats the deal?
