my first apt in NYC was $600/month, but I shared it with a guy who only was there one weekend a month. It was maybe 600 square feet, it was 6 floor walkup, and it was 45 minutes to work on the train.
my current apt is $2000/month, it's about 700 sq. feet, 20-30 minutes on the train, and it's in a cool place - a parking spot is another $300/month.
my lawyer friend lived 10 minutes from her work, had a nice 2 bedroom apartment, with doorman, etc. she paid $3400/month.
compare that to where you live, expensive is relative
