Moral absolutism you say?
- mrdobolina0
now you want to drop the current topic because you are dead wrong about it...
- flagellum0
mrdobolina, what you need to understand is that there are some words in hebrew which are not conveyed well in english. The role of the servant was as I detailed in the quote above. Some would offer themselves to the role, utilizing their skillset.
The type of slavery that the Bible condemns is the kind you are thinking of.

whatever helps you, mrdobolina. You've ignored the very reasonable explanation I cited above.
- mrdobolina0
so slaves weren't beaten then?
- mrdobolina0
you are defending fucking slavery, you realize that right?
- TheBlueOne0
No, no Dobs..again, wrong. You see all that slave beating stuff was in the Old Testament. Jesus came along and changed the deal.
They just keep that Old Testament stuff in there for street cred and to scare the natives into worshipping.
All the Jesus/New Testament stuff is what counts. Except, you know for the parts in the Old Testament that said man shall not lie with another man. That bit still counts, but the slave stuff? Oh come on...

mrdobolina, I will now refer you to the lengthy explanation I gave mimio above.

What a fractured exegesis, blueOne. Don't quit your day job, please.
- Mimio0
There is no debate. The Bible means ownership of human beings and that's what it says.
Apparently there's something wrong with the translation I quoted earlier discipler? How is that not clear in the Bible passage?
- flagellum0
Mimio: please see my above response to this claim you've already made. thanks.
- mrdobolina0
flagellum, you are a fucking idiot.
sorry to be so blunt.

(Feb 27 07, 11:35)I wasn't aware that calling me a freshmen liberal arts student was really part of any debate I have heard of before.
- flagellum0
don't take it personally. Sometimes, I just like to play by your rules.
- Mimio0
You previous response is unsatisfactory. I doesn't address the idea of humans owning other humans. You just made exterior conjecture about their living conditions.
- johndiggity0
the bible is not factual.
- flagellum0
I'm not discussing slavery in the Bible any more in this thread. I've provided a perfectly cogent response which addresses the criticisms raised.
- flagellum0
and Mimio you consistently avoid the ancient cultural context, meaning of the terms, etc... I recommend you do an in depth study on the topic rather than applying your modern western understanding.
- lemmys_wart0
makes sense.
god only tells his thoughts to lone men in deserts/on mountians...
i guess we need some other lone man to tell us what a slave is.
