(Dec 19 06, 05:59)His description of the gold rush and market collapse it ended with came to my mind when the dotcom bubble burst.. those were so identical.

(Dec 19 06, 06:17)yup, but it's the way people had invested in paper companies that was so similar in both booms.

.I'm not sure i follow you. Paper companies being invested in dot-com era doesn't compute here. the relation, i mean.

(Dec 19 06, 06:27)I might have not worded it right: I meant companies whose worth existed only on paper. People invested in anything web-related before the collapse, Twain describes the very same story from 150 years earlier. Huge lumps of gold were dug out from holes, dragged to NY on trains and mine shares were sold instantly. Nobody bothered to check if there was anything but that lump in the hole.

damn dotcommers
one day there'll be a NFL team called that.

- mpfree0
I don't. I'm a Libertarian. Socially liberal, Fiscally conservative. Libertarians believe that you have the right to live your life as you wish, without the government interfering -- as long as you don’t violate the rights of others. Politically, this means Libertarians favor rolling back the size and cost of government, and eliminating laws that stifle the economy and control people’s personal choices.
But I dooooooo hate all the mutual slacker Democrato-asskissin' here.

I hear you mpfree, but the older I have gotten the more I realize the government's role in creating the "common good" and how that favors everyone...especially corporations by creating a fair and even place for them to compete - bc there is no such thing as a "free" market without an authority to act as referee..There's alot of costs that societies/governments shoulder to make capitalism work successfully, and these are the first things alot of these "government sucks" people get into power you end up getting corruption and monoplolies.
I do believe that government should be relatively small..but it should be competent and fair, and have enough funds to operate thusly...
