jesus, ethics in design? We aren't curing cancer or developing space travel for NASA. We make things look pretty...

im affraid to inform but im 26 and at university. also am sorry you dont think much of the subject, and feel if you lookied into the subject you might find in very informative, and will also find many other pasionate designers talking and debating over it. my point is not not to tell someone that this is right or this is wrong, or that mcD's and nike are wrong but at least make people aware, pick up a copy of No Logo and see what you think... ps as soon as its done ill send it to you, your opinion would help because your anti this subject im assuming and you will be able to tell me if its just a large piece of propoganda or a well detailed research

(Nov 15 06, 07:26)Not sure if this was directed at me, but I am pro what you're doing. No need to get so defensive about it all.
Send it over when you're done. I would love to read it. And like I said before, read Victor Papenaks book, it was written in the 7o's but is still applicable now.

how are you going to form a thesis around this subject? are you going interview the designers? are you going to construct an argument on the ethics of individual companies?
Is it design as a function of ethics or ethics as a function of design?

Hi lowimpkt, with regards to your question i am looking to find out whether it is ethical on the designers part to do work for a company such as Nike knowing only two well that their human rights record is appauling. is it better for the designer to refuse any connections with these companies or is it better for them to work for the companies (if they get the chance) and try and make a positive change from within. hope this answers your question, and would be very grateful to know your opinions on this topic.

I know you're asking for designers who do 'non-ethical' work for McDonalds but there some designers who do ethical work for them too. Speak to Phatlee as I know that Wash did some kind of pitch/project for them. I believe it was quite truthful in it's approach.

i'm just not sure if selecting individual companies will benefit your thesis. You may be open to libel and so your research will become bogged down ensuring a legal basis to your argument. e.g. do you remember the McLibel trial?
what I said about ethics as a function of design or design as a function of ethics should be a framework to your reasoning....

AKQA just won the McDonalds account.

guys thanks alot for tsking the time to reply it is all helping me build a profile on what you guys who already work in the industry think. i am not targeting any "unethical" companies strongly and i make any mention of them in my report it is purly for comparitve purposes only, my veiws are just my opinions and are no way correct or incorrect, and i wish to not brand anyone because they might use certain products that choose not to. i think what i am trying to get across is, could we (if we choose to) make a difference to the problems in the world around us. where i deem it ethical or unethical is when certain companies have proved to have failed external humanity investigations and does it then become our responsibilty as designers to promote or refuse that assignment.... i would really appreciate some more of your answers PRO AND ANTI of my comments, thank you in advance

ethics are relative.

so are you really talking about value, responsibility and the relatinships designers have with their client??
can you concieve of a scenario where a graphic designer could really become internal to business functions/strategy (i.e. change how these companies see themselves and the business choices they make)? Generally design is a tool and designer are simple a function of business practice.
You rarely meet designers that try to (or have the capacity to) sell design as a strategic business tool......
just a point
