so are you really talking about value, responsibility and the relatinships designers have with their client??
can you concieve of a scenario where a graphic designer could really become internal to business functions/strategy (i.e. change how these companies see themselves and the business choices they make)? Generally design is a tool and designer are simple a function of business practice.
You rarely meet designers that try to (or have the capacity to) sell design as a strategic business tool......
