I am writing a dissertation on the ethics of design, and was wondering if there was anyone who could tell me who creates and designs for McDonalds (they dont fall under the ethical catergory by the way).... Also if anyone can direct me to any designers or design firms that operate in an "ethical" way, like Graphic Thought Facilty as an example. looking forward to any replies and advice that you could give on this topic.

no i want to mention the designer of mcDonalds as an example of unethical designing, im comparing non corporate designing to designers who work for McDonalds, Nike etc

search for 'green design', and you'll find a lot on that corner of the ethical debate
sustainable design with a conscience vs. mass market junk promotions

mcdonalds will use 1000s of designers worldwide, there is no one agency that does their work

paraselene finding your link an excellent source and will def be using it as an example of ethical design, was pretty much the exact practise i was looking for as they specifically comment of their ethical beliefs

Dammit, now you made me crave a Big Mac...

Victor Papenak wrote one of the first treatises on "design for the real world"
Not what you were asking, but I would check it out.

my aim which i am finding very challenging is to show that great design work and finacial gain can be accomplished without having to sell your soul to "unethical" corporate companies. but also to try to find out whether its better to remove ourselves from this type of client base because we disagree with their values, OR do we work for these comapnies and try to make a change from within??

bluejam once again a big thank you to you too, like paraselene's link your is proving to also be a very useful one, thanks for your time :)

You're still at college I assume? AS I don't knwo many deisgners that involve themselves in this sort of discourse and actually write anything about it.
I was going to ask a few questions here, but its such a meaty topic that I wouldn't know were to start.
But if your keen, I would love to read what you've written. So post it somewhere if you're keen.

im affraid to inform but im 26 and at university. also am sorry you dont think much of the subject, and feel if you lookied into the subject you might find in very informative, and will also find many other pasionate designers talking and debating over it. my point is not not to tell someone that this is right or this is wrong, or that mcD's and nike are wrong but at least make people aware, pick up a copy of No Logo and see what you think... ps as soon as its done ill send it to you, your opinion would help because your anti this subject im assuming and you will be able to tell me if its just a large piece of propoganda or a well detailed research

"my point is not not to tell someone that this is right or this is wrong, or that mcD's and nike are wrong "
uh... aren't you calling them unethical? Everyone's gotta eat, and every company's got a bottom line.
I can see both sides of the fence, but let's not turn our noses up at people for designing packaging for McDonalds. I don't see that being anywhere near as bad as designing an organized hate group's website, for example. They promote hate...
McDonalds promotes tasty meat treats.

:) sorry gucci your point is correct and its made me chuckle too which was nice, i sit of both sides too i smoke marlboro, i drink coka cola so im not exempt, when i use unethical i use it as a social connection not mine, thank you too for responding.... ps it might be tasty but its not meat :)

it is worse to design "greenwash" ads for BP?
or a layout a sustainability report for Shell
or design corporate social responsibility report for Tesco
meh

if mcdonalds uses quickbooks, does that mean I'm being unethical today
