cheers morilla. I've heard a lot of good things about san diego.
anyone know anything about Santa Barbara, Carlsbad, Newport Beach or Huntington Beach?

a lot of jobs in cali. i'd say stay away from LA and san diego. san diego is pretty boring (no offense to anyone that lives there. it's beautiful just doesn't have a ton of stuff going on in my opinion) and LA is just kinda dank and a pain in the ass to get around in. socal is like a giant suburb/urban sprawl and is pretty boring...but has surfing and a lot of web jobs available. also has mountains to snowboard that are only about 1 hour inland.
i love san fran...never lived there (only visited mind you) but it's got a much more big city feel to it. tons going on, lots of design shops...but heard the weather can get pretty shitty especially compared to socal. my 2 cents.

you dont live in SoCal to be in a "city" environment.

hey. i just moved to NYC from SoCal and have lots of surfer friends doing design work... so my advice is: you can freelance and get by pretty well, best cities for surfing (most) of san diego (mainly north county (encinitas, cardiff by the sea, carlsbad)... a bit up north, THE surfer town is San Clemente (and one of the most popular surf beaches is walking distance)... my friends live in Laguna, but the surf is alright... there are some nice hidden spots tho... and of course, huntigton beach, but the town sucks (in my opinion)... and i agree with the other guys, LA is no good. ha! but I lived there for a while and had a bad experience... sooo, SoCal is the palce to be.. BUT! Northern California is the most beautiful area of the state, you could live in SF and drive down to mavericks or other popular spots and surf away.... good luck. surfs up.

i would say your best bet is OC huntington beach if you really like surfing. OC has a lot of design going on, its all very trendy and gay if you ask me but hey they got a lot of sh*t to do. OC also a bunch of crazy rich white people (no offense, its ture) but i think you'll get what your looking for design, surf, and hot chicks. I live in SD i just moved back from OC and Long Beach. I was raised in SD so i like it here. a lot of good surf, great food, hot chicks, all kinds of people from all types of places (military town) the only bad thing is that design is not as available as OC or LA. anyway good luck and bring lots of cash it ain't cheap homie. :)

Cheers sofakingzero. Although from what I hear it's a hell of a lot cheaper than what I'm used to paying in the UK!

Move to Santa Monica. There are a few good design shops there, my bosses' former employer (Doug Oliver) for one. I think there are a few decent surf spots nearby.
Or move to NY, and next fall take the ferry from Long Island to Narragansett. Biggest/cleanest surf you'll see on the East Coast. Seven pointbreaks within a 20 minute drive of Point Judith. If it's REALLY big, south swell, and you don't have the proper board for Ruggles, dig around in the neighborhoods behind Point Judith. South of the marina, before the breakwater. You're welcome.
