hey. i just moved to NYC from SoCal and have lots of surfer friends doing design work... so my advice is: you can freelance and get by pretty well, best cities for surfing (most) of san diego (mainly north county (encinitas, cardiff by the sea, carlsbad)... a bit up north, THE surfer town is San Clemente (and one of the most popular surf beaches is walking distance)... my friends live in Laguna, but the surf is alright... there are some nice hidden spots tho... and of course, huntigton beach, but the town sucks (in my opinion)... and i agree with the other guys, LA is no good. ha! but I lived there for a while and had a bad experience... sooo, SoCal is the palce to be.. BUT! Northern California is the most beautiful area of the state, you could live in SF and drive down to mavericks or other popular spots and surf away.... good luck. surfs up.
