well..
what you are doing is generalizing, now more than ever, technology and communications made frontiers almost dissapear.Location is not important anymore , as we speak I am working for a clients in UK , Finland and Ecuador. From the states.
I can see there might be some certain influences from your own area but its minimal, not because I was born In brazil means I'm going to be designing like nando costa. That is non sense, sorry.
No offense but traveling around the world will completly change your mind about this.

for me it is not about who is right or not. jesus sometimes this is like a fucking kindergarten with people sticking feathers up each others arses without arguments.
i don't want a circle jerk or yes and no camps..
i want to see arguments and don't want people to look at simply the few uberhip top design shops. i mean design in the broad sense of it.

i don't think what crouwel said is true yet, but it may be in a decade or so...
- mr_snuggles0
sorry, snugs. but in the day and age of globalisizisizzleisa tion and innernets this is becomeing less and less true. i feel very strongly about it. it makes me care less about the subject of design as a bearer of local/national culture as well.

(Oct 17 06, 08:50just because you hate yourself, don't take it to this level, don't lower your nations grasp of directness, simplicity and pure mastery of typography to the level of the nopatterns and ywft's of the world...
I mean fuck man, i'm startin to hate on the dutch too, but I have to give em credit where credit is due...

you guys watch too much american tv.
Meeklo
(Oct 17 06, 08:41)100% telemundo for me man.

(Oct 17 06, 08:52)No man, I travel.
I talk to people. and I actually can't stand telemundo. No offense to you.

i only travelled around the world virtually.
anyway, for as far as i can see people migrating more and more (yes this is a tendency) and internet offering possibilities for cultural exchange within seconds, national influence will fade evermore.
i went to switzerland but couldn't see much anymore in their day-to-day graphic design products (everything printed basically) that would really represent the muller brockmann area.
it was a real disappointment.

Maybe most of Canadian design is similar to the US, but it'd be interesting to find out what others thought. I'm being very indecisive today.

- mr_snuggles0
meeklo have you ever looked at the Brazil inspired book?
page after page of pretty much the same bloody thing. Don't tell me nations don't have a fucking signature...
Of course it's a fucking generalization, but that's what we're talking about, the generalizations... well, apparently, you're not... but stereotypes and generalizations exist for a reason... because they're there...

(Oct 17 06, 08:53)true.
but ffs, remember when us two discussed american design (also rand etc.?). i still stand by my point that American design has its absolute glory days in terms of design and typography as well. it is jsut merely the commercial nature of the country that made design a bit of a spoiled child in the US.
and please, do remember, there's a LOT of nopatterns in NL as well, it is jsut that there is so few dutchies getting on this website. most dutch designers give a shit about newstoday.

and true, i am bitter. (snuggles knows, and now you all now)

crouwel sees everyone as equal. it's commendable.

It's all relative, and should commuicate the same messaging. unless you are inbred, then your shit just looks retarded.

----have you heard of editorial influence?
it strikes me how design from a nation is often influenced by curators and publishers jsut selecting that which they deem best fitting for their cultural ideals or writings.
i think the majority of design shops in brazil/us/nl/switzerland makes the same corporate design trendish drivel as any other country.
you just don't see these in the annuals. or hardly.
gives it all quite a biased view on a nation, not?

maybe the world is not as big and wonderful as we thought when we're growing up. I think that's Crouwel's problem - everybody's problem in fact.
So...
Who's gonna pay for this? Americans?
Yes!
- vespa0
crouwel am i misunderstanding you or are you seriously denying that different countries have different visual cultures?
i'm not saying one country is better or worse but the world is much higher in cultural resolution than a computer monitor.
is the sentence above painfully cheesy? i had to delete the angst because you're making me angry. thank god snuggles is talking some sense! quick snuggles say something obnoxious or i will despair!

sure American design has been brilliant, Saul Bass has done some of my favorite and influential corporate work in the butthole of it all, LA..
All I'm saying is that the statement you made by starting this thread is like when a politician says "I'm all about equality, I'm colour-blind" to me it's worse than saying you hate niggers... To me it says I'm not going to recognize your heritage and where you come from or even put that into consideration....
I don't want to argue about it, but I don't think we should be so quick to dismiss it's existence? Who/What does it hurt by acknowledging the trend or style?
Even today whether it was a pisstake or not, you did it yourself in the Save british design thread...
