If you're on a budget, I've been told that components are more important than the frame when considering a purchase. It's a lot more exy to upgrade components individually while their is less difference in frames when comparing dollar-for-dollar...

(Oct 12 06, 15:10)I have to disagree. If you're doing any offroad riding, you'll end up going through components. whether it's snagging your derailer on a rock, or taco-ing a wheel, you will need to replace some components throughout the life of a bicycle. With respect to the drivetrain, the difference in performance between the different groupo levels is marginal. A smarter choice would be to get the cheaper drivetrain and get it tuned every couple of months at your bike shop. you'll probably get better performance than the guy with the $200 derailer, and all it'll cost you is $15 every couple of months and maybe some new cables.
buy your frame to last, your components can be upgraded as needed.

try to get your $ together and shoot for something closer to $1000 - $1200. the difference between that and a $500 bike is incredible. specialized, giant, and trek all have something good in the 1k price range. seriously, the different is well worth it.
i wound not by used at all. you just dont know how its been ridden or kept. small cracks in the aluminum, bottom brackets can fail if not maintained... all that. just buy a solid new bike.

$500 is a bit low for a decent mountain bike. The threshold for getting a good bike with lighter, better components seems to break around $650 - $1000 and, obviously, goes from there. I got a Giant that retails for about $700 and it's got good stuff, but it's pretty heavy. You might not mind until you ride something lighter. Huge difference when hauling up a hill...
It also helps to work in the industry where you get stuff for less than wholesale. :)

since you're in europe you might want to check www.cube-bikes.com, great value for great price. They all have at least Deore groups and good forks (Fox, Rock Shox). Best buy for your budget imo.

$500 ain't much for a bike.
Think of it like a computer - about the same price/performance ratio.
You should buy used unless you can spend a decent amount. Or at least find a good sale.
You should be able to find a good sale now or soon, with winter here and new models on the floor.
