$500 is a bit low for a decent mountain bike. The threshold for getting a good bike with lighter, better components seems to break around $650 - $1000 and, obviously, goes from there. I got a Giant that retails for about $700 and it's got good stuff, but it's pretty heavy. You might not mind until you ride something lighter. Huge difference when hauling up a hill...
It also helps to work in the industry where you get stuff for less than wholesale. :)
