ANyone know how to get music off an iPod when it's tragically become your only backup?
My HD crapped out and I lost my latest purchases and they are only on my iPod which I don't want to update with newer stuff b/c I'll loose the old.
Anyone know how to get things off of it without still having the original files?
Thanks for any help.

For a Mac, I use Senuti (check versiontracker.com).
It has the notable feature of being the only iPod->HDD software I've found that recognizes MP3's bought from the iTMS and copies them
If you're on a PC, check VT and Google for Ipod To PC. You'll get some links, although I'm not sure of anything specific.

I don't know why people buy I Pods instead of iriver or creative. The IPod ads are the most annoying commercials since the GAP.

iPod Rip is an easy to use application.

(Sep 6 06, 09:15)probably because they make purchasing decisions based on it's actual functionality and not what someone is wearing in an advert.

****************Here's the thing. iPods are sexier than anything else on the market. That is a truth that trancends personal preference and taste. During the time you spend not believing that, it's spending that time still being true without you. That truth doesn't need you, and it won't wait on you.
So, give your iRiver and/or Creative to your worst enemy and get on board.

And thanks for the tips everyone, I'll check 'em out.

The difference is that I can record and retrieve anything I want in and out of it.
There's no cap on encoding quality either. If you pay 12$ for an album encoded at 128kbps you're a sad loser.

(Sep 6 06, 11:34)He does have a point there, I made the mistake of buying an album through itunes, and it sucks. I will not buy music from them again.
But you can still load regular mp3 files on your ipod, so no worries.

(Sep 6 06, 11:34)hmm.. i get everything on/off that i want and i don't buy music on the itunes music store (which imposes the cap, NOT the ipod). i guess that means i deserve a device that suits my needs perfectly, yeah!

I got my ipods because they're sexy and most of all, thin. I have the video one now and watch tv shows during commute. It's the best portable hard drive I had.
Not worth $370, but as somebody said, it's sexy. How come http://rockbox.org is never mentioned here? It is an opensource firmware for most players including ipods and irivers. You can upload/download whatever you want, it has gapless playback, an equalizer, and some extra features, like unicode support for text files.
I have never installed it though :)

i really wish you could also directly record into the ipod via a mixer. that would be dope!
tried some linux based stuff but nothing seems to work and/or sound quality is shit...guess it's just a hack on the sound test that is really only for voice quality which is really low.

senuti... works the best and free.

after updatng the ipod, I just copy all the songs as data for a back up.
helps if you havea 60gb ipizzle

the cool thing about my iriver id I can record from any device that has a mini jack / phono oout straight into my mp3 iriver I also get radio and I also get to record my voice via the funky built in mic this was particularily groovy as I can record talks I go to etc. anouther plus point of my iriver is that I can listen to wmas etc. aswell as mp3's and it only uses one aa batterie with a playback life twice that of an ipod, it's also solid state storage so it's not succeptable to the same problems as a hard disc therfore also is lighter than a m/f so I can thrash down a hill on my mountain bike and this bad boy won't break and it's light too :D
just a couple of reasons why I bought an iriver and not an ipod.

Chossy,
which iRiver are you rockin?I'm thinking of getting into the mp3 player game.. am also leaning towards iRiver bc of superior sound quality. I'm not entirely a fan of iTunes too.
