I live in Los Angeles and need a bike to move around the streets, to the water, through traffic, etc. I want something that stays near $700. Eventually I hope that I fall in love with riding that I end up on trails.
Any advice on what i should get?

im in the market for a good fixed gear bike as well. I like the IRO Mark V.. http://www.irocycle.com/id12.htm…

level2b I am very new to this so should I be looking at that type of bike for street riding as opposed to some type of hybrid of a trail or mountain bike? Do I have no business being on a mountain bike or is it just too heavy for street riding?

A hybrid may be best for you if you want to do both on and off-rode riding. The bike in the link is strictly for riding on the road. Plus, it's a fixed gear, which takes some getting used to. Fixed gear means there is only one gear and no fly-wheel. Some love it, some hate it.

Do you know if it's a comfy ride or will it be hard on the arse being on it for an hour or two?
- level2b0
if you get the right size it's very comfortable.

Are there any competitors to the Mark V? i love its look but I noticed there aren't any dealers here in LA for me to try it out.

if you're doing long rides in LA, i'd go for a road bike.
i have a few friends that have ridden fixed gears for years, but they bought new bikes once out there because of the long commutes.
if you're buying a bike, buy used. LA craigslist and ebay will have tons of stuff. most of the time a used bike will be half of the retail or less.

that's a nice fit calculator to make shopping a little easier.

for fixed gear i would buy the pista or KHS flite 100. iro's come with substandard components and you'll break them in no time.
i wouldn't recomment the pista concept for the road. it's aluminum, thus super stiff and isn't very forgiving on the gooch when doing long city rides. the wheelset on it is also pretty delicate when it comes to street riding.

also get a good helmet and watch for traffic/signs. ill most likely almost run you over on accident.

the Bianchi Pista looks pretty sweet. made me want one too.

yeah, traffic here. L.A, is crazy.

I bought a Specialised crossroads 6 months ago. Cost about
$450 dollars, It was the cheapest they had.I love it. Great bike, robust enough to bomb down gravel paths at the weekend, and great on the road. Highly recommend it.

wow! thank you all! MLP if aluminum isn't forgiving doing city rides, what is? Sorry if that's a noob question but I am a noob. :)
