Would this be a bike worth considering? http://www.specialized.com/bc/SB…

if you've never had a bike, why not just go on craigslist or go into a store, get a cheapo used one and see what you like and dont like about it, before you drop $700 on something you don't even know you'll want or like.
You don't need super high end mega performance right away. Just make sure you get a 'love canal' bike seat if you're gonna be on there for a while.

Greedo I have had cheap bikes in the past and I think that it's always the comfort issue (because they have been cheap) that tends to stop me from biking often. I think if I spend a bit and this time buy a real bike rather than some generic bike for $300 I will experience love for it.

o ok...well then just make sure you test ride them first. if you have a long commute, don't get a fixed gear.

Well I own a car but the bike is for exercise, to get out more often and for fun but I want to use it for small quick trips too. Like to the store or whatever rather than take the car. Skip the fixed gear because I think you're right. Would this bike do me good? http://www.specialized.com/bc/SB… Also aluminum versus what? I am not sure what type of bike I should get because I want a forgiving one rather than a bike that makes me feel like I have just been beat up.

oh, before you buy, definitely go to a local shop and ride them. then narrow it down from there.

I ride a Specialized Hardrock - it works great for city riding and trail riding - very comfortable and responsive.
- CarlClay0
nice ride radar. a bit thick for my particular needs but I assume light?

Thanks Chief

i have a very old cannodale from like 1996. i took it around the city this weekend. it was a lot of fun. i would ride to work if i could bring it up to my office.
- radar0
that bike is very light - especially for the size - it has the same brakes, gears and suspension as the Kona in a similar price range.

hardrock is good. that model has been around forever and it's very solid. it's a really good deal.

I wouldn't worry too much about weight. If I was riding in the city, I would buy something used, and worth fuck all, as it will probably get pinched.

aluminum would be fine, but the tight geometry (seat post is more vertical) of the concept + it being aluminum is where it makes it a little dicey.
steel frames are going to be more forgiving.
