if you're doing long rides in LA, i'd go for a road bike.
i have a few friends that have ridden fixed gears for years, but they bought new bikes once out there because of the long commutes.
if you're buying a bike, buy used. LA craigslist and ebay will have tons of stuff. most of the time a used bike will be half of the retail or less.
