We are thinking of hiring professional movers to move our stuff from NY to Texas. Last time we did it ourselves and it was a pain in the arse. Does anyone have any horror/success stories? What about ballpark cost?
Cheers,

we moved offices recently, some huge f- off russians came over and shifted the lot in a few hours in military precision. If those guys turned criminal I'd hate to think of how much stuff they could steal in one night.

i moved from... texas (dallas) to nyc about two years ago.
don';t do it yourself, ohhh god don't.
i used united moving. they were GREAT. i chose to pack everything myself and they even gave me free (used) boxes. they tagged everybox with a number as it left my apt with me watching and wrote it all down. then when they delivered i choecked them off as they walked in the door.
do not go with a small moving company, only go with a big name. there are alot of scammers out there. one common scam is they will load your stuff, leave and then tell you it weighed more then they though so you have to pay more. and will not give you your stuff unless you pay them. nearly illegal.
thats why you should go with a name brand company. and you sign a contract which states that their estimate of weight is the final number and can not be changed.
feel free to email me about any other details.
may i ask why you are moving and where to?

honest, russia (or similar) are grea for local moves. i would not suggest it for long distance moves.

NY to Texas... bend over
I'd guess it'll be about 4K to move you. But i'm not sure how much stuff you got either. Plus, moving companies insure your stuff by the pound. So if they break your stuff, they pay you like .40 cents per pound. So be careful. I hate moving...

4K sounds about right.
my move from dallas to nyc was about 2500 and i did not have hardly any furniture. now it would be about 4. expecially with rising gax prices.get the higher insurance rate. 40cents/pound is the minimum built in by law.

ABF freight
about $1800 to move from cali to colorado, they park the trailer in front of your house and you pack it. They drive it and drop off at new house, you unpack

Thanks so much guys! Very helpful.
ldww...My wife and I moved to NY a couple of years ago. As much as we love it, we feel our time here has come to an end. We are going to store our stuff in Austin and travel around for a year or so.

good luck man.
i hear you about nyc. i love it here, but long for a 'normal' life.

just moved from South Carolina to DC... UHAUL'ed everything ourselves. DON'T DO IT. Worst thing ever. The money you save isn't worth it.
I'm now pissed at uhaul. What other place would have their HQ in DC closed on a Sunday?! and their HQ doesn't accept trailers?! So stupid. Also my wife had a bunch of migrants literally jump on the uhaul when we stopped at a red light at a bus stop in DC... and that was the day we moved in. So glad the doors were locked.
*end rant

when we moved up here we sold all of our furniture and UPSed about 20 boxes for $900. Then we packed clothes and stuff and our two dogs in our prius and drove. Which wasn't so bad. Now we have things that we don't want to sell and the thought of UHAULing it gives me heart palpitations. Thanks for the words of wisdom. 4K doesn't sound all that bad right now.

my gf and i did the uhaul thing from dallas to los angeles back in march.
worst idea ever.
ever.
especially the part where we got snowed in in new mexico. i didn't know nm even got snow...
anyway, between towing the car and being super paranoid about hitting someone when switching lanes in that barn on wheels, it was hard to enjoy the trip itself - which 'should' be part of the moving experience. and with the price of gas, we didn't save much in the end.
and we got lucky with leaving our trailer at a non-trailer-dropoff location...

I'm wondering if the U-Haul thing would be a tiny bit easier if I got a truck instead of a trailer and had the other person drive the car (this really wouldn't work if there were 2 cars though), and I figure it would only be worth it for a move that took 1 day to get to the new location.

my research found ABF to be 1/3 the price of uhaul plus they pay for the gas and drive the POS

We recently moved from Texas to Colorado and hired movers to do everything including packing. It was a very good decision.
Luckily, my wife's new job paid for it, but it was somewhere around 3-4k.

i am not moving anytime soon. but this is all good to know. moving within the city is painful enough, i can hardly imagine how painful it would be to move out of the state.
next time i move is when i buy a place.

Uhaul is the least practical once you factor in gas prices

pods is another option too. I've heard that is pretty ok also. But not experience with it.
you might want to just use them, pack it in ny, have them store it in texas and go travel the world.
