i moved from... texas (dallas) to nyc about two years ago.
don';t do it yourself, ohhh god don't.
i used united moving. they were GREAT. i chose to pack everything myself and they even gave me free (used) boxes. they tagged everybox with a number as it left my apt with me watching and wrote it all down. then when they delivered i choecked them off as they walked in the door.
do not go with a small moving company, only go with a big name. there are alot of scammers out there. one common scam is they will load your stuff, leave and then tell you it weighed more then they though so you have to pay more. and will not give you your stuff unless you pay them. nearly illegal.
thats why you should go with a name brand company. and you sign a contract which states that their estimate of weight is the final number and can not be changed.
