right on, ants.
I have an Aunt that is a REAL christian. I love her a lot and think she is a great lady. Some other "christians" make me want to puke. You have anything like that, that talks about 'ambition'?

teachers of the law and Pharisees = Religious leaders.
You know, Jesus pointed out a whole lot and said they weren't living for God - but themselves.
No wonder they wanted to kill him.

(Jul 19 06, 17:17)Yeah she's probably not an aussie though ;) Her loss!
What do you mean by ambition?
- mrdobolina0
just being overly-ambitious in your ways, more enriching yourself than spreading christ's message.

Jesus had some dope ideas, but these "christians" make me sick.

It's funny - I know you won't like this but Christ's message was that MrDobs is going to be without God - you're going to hell. But hey, he allowed himself to be asphixiated (sp?), tortured and drowned in his own lung juice because he doesn't want you to die. If his claim is wrong - then nothing else he said is worth listening to and you are right to slag me off.
Sincerely not trying to be a smart ass here.

(Jul 19 06, 17:35)Someone said something about the gospels being made up or something...
This link is a really good read - haven't finished it myself. The guy is a freaking genius and although an American - I still agree with him ;)

He spoke here in Oz at Sydney Uni a few years ago and he seems quite well balanced and self aware of the criticisms and challenges facing the proof of Jesus' claims to be God.

ants, i don't think anyone said the Gospels were made up - they are certainly historical documents from the early era of christianity - there is enough scholarship on that account. What was brought into the discussion (by moi) was a) the wealth of other material about early christianity (some of the Gnostic Gospels, Thomas in particular, Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.) that offer a glimpse into the "evolution" of early chritianity and b) the nature of Judaism at the time of Jesus - which was awash in tons of mysticism and politics (for me the historical Jesus makes far more sense when placed in the proper context.
I was raised a Catholic (hence a "fake christian" to all these born agains who think the Pope and the Vatican are either the antichrist or holding his place until the real antichrist arrives). I however don't hold the belief that Jesus was the Son of God, nor was he raised form the dead. I do think he presented mankind with one of the better ethical and moral outlooks we've had - the Sermon on the Mount is worth the pric eof admission. And yeah, I've read the Bible front to back, and read alot of the hstorical and archeaolgical work out there. I find the Bible a deep and sacred work reflecting most of humanities deeper truths. Do I tkae it literally? No.
As a biblical scholar once said to me: "Imagine a book that Plato wrote the forward to, and Stephen King wrote the last chapter, and in the intervening yaers you had about forty groups of editors who tried to change the meaning of things a few times, and you'll basically get the Bible. I laugh when people come up to me and say 'I don't believe in the Bible because it's full of contradictions'. Well OF COURSE IT IS, that's the point, and that's where it's spirituality lies - in that paradox"
One of the most insightful things I have heard...and also when I have to deal with people who take it you know, literally, it's like they miss the deeper spiritual tests of having to deal with the contradiction and paradox...

At this stage I just want to address one thing you said, I sadly am in the middle of the day and have to work (although it wouldn't seem that way by my posts)...

I think God takes your case further - if the Bible is not true then we are to be pittied more than anyone. Who really therefore cares if it's "spiritual" or not? If the central core message goes out then I am living a dead religion.

I hear you ant, and I respect that interpretation of the Bible..but again, I don't believe it. And I don't think you need a belief in a spiritual afterlife to make a religion live or dead. Jesus Disciples believed in his words and what he said, and found the resonance of truth in them years before they apparently saw him rise fomr the dead. Why word the words and meanings he expressed before he died have more meaning after?
I always felt that Jesus really literally meant that the Kingdom of Heaven WAS here, now..stop waiting around for it. It's your for the asking at every moment of your life...lillies of the field and all that. The whole focus on his resurrection to me seems more the fulfillment of Jewish mystical beliefs tied in with certain dionystic beliefs common in the medeterramiam at the time.
Does the death and resurection of Jesus, literally have anything to do with the example and moral outlook he set forth? I have frankly never seen the connection...if you need ot believe that he died and was resurected more power to you, but I don't think it changes the depth and meaning of his words and example one iota.

ha ha!!
"The European Union on Monday agreed to allow funding for human embryonic stem cell experiments after member states compromised on the way the research is financed.
The decision comes a week after President George W. Bush angered the research community by vetoing an expansion in federal funding for stem cell science in the US."
