(Jul 9 06, 14:46)Not mine. I was recording all of the group games, ripping the commentary out, and adding some other... but then I realized I was running out of hard drive space. Oops.
Also not mine, but also funny.

"So you have your victory. It will be remembered as the final in which Zidane lost his head. Not the final in which France outplayed Italy for 2/3rds of the match and then went out on penalties. Not as the final in which Zidane exerted a mesmeric influence. It will be remembered only for his headbutt.
So you have your victory, and your bete noire. How convenient. Now Italy can claim their shallow redemption, make it seem as though as is OK, maybe not perfect, but OK in Italy. But anyone with an idea of what?s wrong and right knows different. In Italy, football is still the focus of racism in the top level.. A western European country where monkey chants and bananas are still a part of top level matches. We can talk smugly about how this is only a problem in the Eastern European countries. But it?s not. That?s why I was so glad France smashed Spain, and I would have loved them to smash Italy. Also, Italy seems to have never accepted its imperial atrocities in Ethiopia, or in the Balkans. People of colour do not break into Italian society circles.
But it?s OK now, you?ve won the World Cup, and Zidane, the perpetrator, broke the rules.Enjoy the hollow little reign.
The status quo in Italy receives its assurance from this result. Everything is well, we are winners. Those who complain and doubt are miserablist outsiders. Our nation, our spirit, is strong. Why should we change? Let us continue to live with all the familiar illusions intact.
And for the losers? The team who played for most of the game? Who were undone by their captain?s susceptibility to provocation? Nothing. Nothing but ignominy, criticism, condemnation.
The winners are vindicated, all because of the bete noire, the villain. They can justify themselves. What greater fallacy? The Italian team, untainted by hot-tempered immigrant children, has prevailed. So what if we provoked them pushed them to their limit of tolerance?
We are still superior. Italy, the isolated, insular, the singular.
What a victory.
I could weep."

quickly translated interviews from french papers
------
After the game, Jean-Pierre Escalettes saw "a sad man" in the cloakroom. "I do not have an explanation to ask him, explained the president of the FFF. The gesture of Zidane did not have an influence on the final result. I neither want to judge or blame him, he's a sad and affected man, one should not shoot at the artist ".
According to Raymond Domenech, on TF1: "we missed him during the twenty last minutes already. That weighed heavy in the balance. It's too bad".In a previous interview with Canal +, the coach had been more reserved. "To make him end this way, it's sad. He had a great career, a great world cup. When one takes blows like he did for 1h20 and the referee says nothing, one can understand. You can't excuse, but you can understand".

by "french" I meant mostly the few I know in my city--nothing agianst the honorable cactus

I would feel sorry for Henry (a major player), but i never got along with the fuss around Zidane. He's known for heavy foul-play before and he surely isn't the best football player ever.
He's just the wrong face for a whole generation of good tactical french players. People forget Dessailly, Duchamp, Trezeguet, etc.
French media promoted him to butter up a bursting algerian community. just politics.
get real.
- fooler0
that first PK was BS. We saw much more blatent fouls in the box later in the game...
I got this from Sporting Life Clockwatch..
109 - Clearly headbutts Materazzi after a verbal altercation with the Italian. Sent off and ends his career in disgrace.
Ouch, but I couldn't have said it better.
- Crouwel0
overall this was still one of the best referees of the tournament.
*tips hat

Zidane is up there with Pele and Maradona ;)
I'll always respect him

i read a few articles and i love how everyone is saying "it's the world cup! it's the final! what was he thinking?!".
i'm pretty sure Zidane more than anyone knows it's the world cup and it's the final.. this can't be happening out of the blue.
i (like most other french and non-french i guess) am more sad about this incident happening tonight than France losing the game and the cup.
There's a WC every 4 years, but this.. it's not how it deserved to end for him.
He's still high up there for me.

a blogger writes:
"I can lip read Italian.
After reviewing the tape, I can make out the following dialogue:Zidane: Materazzi, you pinch me like an Italian whore.
Materrazzi: You Algerians look like monkeys.
Zidane: Materazzi, I demand satisfaction!
Materrazzi: F**k you, F**k Algeria, F**k your dogs.Upon this insult, Zidane rightfully places the last and greatest header of his life.
Vie le France!!!"

Yeah, my love-crush for Zidane will live on. Just feel really sad FOR HIM!
Thanks for the youtube clip - I see it now - f--king Italians with their gay wrap-arounds, falling all over the place like a bunch of actor wannabees getting busted for premier-league level corruption.
How am I supposed to respect that bullshit -- Piss off!
I have a spare bedroom in my LA apartment BTW Maserrati - or whatever you're name is - come over here and get yourself a fucking talent agent.
:-) Feel better now, rant over.

Obviously a stupid thing to do. I wonder what that other player was saying to him.
Anyhoo...I'm sad the French didn't win :(
