i think traut needs to clarify a few things here as he's made a couple misleading requests which could in turn seriously piss-off XLR8R.
sounds like this is NOT a "XLR8R photoshoot" and $150 is just what the musician has to pay outta pocket for some press-kit photos.
totally different scenario, and if so, traut you *REALLY* shouldn't be calling it an "XLR8R photoshoot". i'd imagine their photo editor would be pissed if he read this thread.

i think traut clearly stated the info.. photo of girl talk going to be in xlr8r.. photo credit and some cash in it for who takes the gig.

wel that kind of money for a photoshoot to appear in the 100th issue doesnt seem right at all. that is completely beside all the points being made in this thread.

ya V4 i completely understand where your coming from and i often think that myself but i still want to do stuff just to do it and get work when im slow with paying stuff, id rather add to my portfolio and get some gas money versus not doing something just because im not going to get paid a grand. i wish everyone could get paid what there worth in all industries but like DP said it doesnt work out that way, i always try and work on both sides of the fence just to keep balanced and because i often have to.

yeah i'm over it, I'd rather you address the 3 comments before your final post
thing is though about helping and free work, it's respectable if you are on top of your game, but not having one and working for peanuts is just going to hold you down, but like dope said, i came with the wrong tone

girltalk asked me to help him find someone to take photos for his spread in the 100th issue of xlr8r, he gave me the amount that could be paid whether thats coming from him or the mag doesnt make a difference its the amount thats being offered, but the photos are for use in the spread he has other photos but the mag i guess wanted something new ? but its all taken care of someones up for the gig and its all good.

makes mental note to find 100th issue of "pretentious rag"
lets see what $175 can get you and what they get out of it

spiderman 3 trailer is online if you's care.

V4, you still have that anger about this thread its quite impressive you can hold onto it like that. hows this sounds when the issue comes out i'll go out and get a copy for you get my friend to sign it hugs & kisses and mail it to you i'll even throw in a copy of his new album if youd like because its not about the money for everyone.

i guess this means i should not be spending $2000 on a camera and hoping one day i'll be a pro.

v4, although heated, makes a good point. hitting someone low doesn't show appreciation or respect for the services rendered.
imo, this is like a lot of places giving unpaid trial periods/internships before you can start there or be considered for full time. while you're working at a place, you're billing out time making the business money and not making taking anything home.

I'm just wondering if there are any actual photographers out there that may have an opinion on this topic.
Anyone?

In my mind it matters who the client is to a large degree. I'm willing to charge less or do pro bono work for a fellow artist or musician, especially if they are struggling to get ahead. I'm guessing Girl Talk, who is ultra-underground and releases music quasi-legally, is not sitting on top of huge pile of cash. Now , if it's just a regular job and some business guy offers $200, of course I would say no way.
- version30
where's carty when you need him?
- horton0
i still think this whole thread is off-topic because its being paid outta GirlTalk's pocket and not XLR8R. i can understand an indie musician with only $150-$200 to spend on a photo.
although i highly doubt he's getting a full spread if he's gotta suppy the content.
unless XLR8R is going to use the shot for an illustration, which is highly likely because they often do spreads like this.

(Jun 27 06, 11:37)thinking the same thing. he hasn't been around for a long while...

well shit. i thought it was being paid from XLR8R. i retract all statements.
- version30
i still have problem with it
xlr8r is putting out their 100th issue
(big deal to them)girltalk will be in it as long as he supplies his own phots
(that sucks)you have to help somone out who is being helped out by being thrown a bone by XLR8R
(that's disrespectful)the 100th issue will also most likely be larger have more art and other added goodies to commemorate the moment
if we are talking about the XLR8R on haight in SF, yeah i still mean everything i said
too big of a to do for them to be slacking on people that way, in my opinion
