i had to find someone to shoot a cover for a mixtape a year or so ago for $200 (no supply allowance) and everyone i called laughed at me. this was a low budget project, but xlr8r is huge now. they should pay better.
makes me wonder how much they're paying illustrators to do their splash pages. they probbably have the cool leverage in full effect on that.

ya i often wonder that i mean some magazines dont even pay you its sort of just to get your name out there and have portfolio work a trade off of sorts. i own a nice camera and know how to shoot it and have all the lenses / tripod / etc etc , but i still like doing stuff just for fun and to help people out. sometimes the design community can be so bitchy

yeah, i'm into doing things on the side and would consider trade offs for the portfolio, etc, but xlr8r is a professional magazine and they should approach their content as so.
its not like they're a startup and need favors. i mean, i doubt they tried to lowball graphic havoc when they did the redesign.

50% of my shoots pay $0.00 but that's how you keep building new work.

Bitchy?
Fuck you, If people call you out for a lowball price be prepared to deal with it. even if it isn't your project, you are the one hawking it, so for you to judge others for protecting their interests is just shallow minded of you.
I will help my friends out as well but that shouldn't have to translate into helping your friends, I mean c'mon, who of you is gonna help my friend just because?
I have 3 dj friends that have been pressed to wax with their own beats and I have shot photography and designed artwork for all of them, one techno based, one house based, and one dnb, i never did it to help my carrer or add something to my portfolio, I did it to help them. and their carreers.
Sure as fuck not to see my name is 8 pt text on the back page of a magazine (yeah the photo credits page, the one no one ever reads)
So i suggest YOU help your friend and respect the fact your peers know this is a BS gig.

i mean thats fair right? he's already got a computer, he's just writing code there's no overhead, c'mon man why won't he do it? i'm your friend he's your friend so that makes us friends right?

There's always someone to do this job. What's interesting is the message this magazine is sending of how much they care for the quality of their content. If you try really hard you might find someone who is talented, just starting out, desperate for work and available and if the photos end up looking good then YOU should be getting paid, the person who started this thread. Is the magazine hoping for that to happen, again this speaks volumes , of them.
The first thing I thought too when reading this is how much they must pay illustrators.

I'm sure any photographer who wants new portfolio work would be more that glad to do that job.

exactly im not looking for some pro with a shit attitude to hound my friend or the mag for more money im looking for someone once again IN THE AREA who doesnt have to travel 1000 miles and whos just eager to have some fun do some decent shots and get a little extra cash. sorry if i offended you V4, wasnt trying to hawk someones talent for cheap im trying to get someone who cant get a break or just wants to do something different something to do. if its not your thing then pass on it you dont have to assult me i know a typical photoshoots not that cheap i know they can be a pain in the ass and im not asking for people to do it on the reasoning alone that hes my friend do it because you like what you fucking do and its not all about fucking money. and no i cant code your lame shit, but i dont fucking care either.

I've worked on sooo many shoots with Timajick where we ended up out of pocket but so what it's more images in the book and that's good for business.
