You simply miss the point version4.
- Momentum20
i think the point is not the money but the respect of the field... if everyone starts doing work for a low ball price then it drops everyone's price.
- moveinspace0
You're right Momentum it isn't about the money. As Timajick said sometimes it is about a chance to do some shots and boost your portfolio. This business is all about promotion and XLR8R is a national magazine. The exposure is huge. Any designer or photographer who wouldn't want that is an idiot and will always be doing sites for real estate companies and wedding shoots on the weekend.
p.s. check Timajick's site he might know what he is talking about.
- Momentum20
but move isn't the point for promotion is to get a good paying gig at a national magazine such as XLR8R?
- moveinspace0
XlR8R doesn't work or pay like that. They are a magazine known for exposing underground artists. It's why their layouts and photographers change constantly. You want good money? Start shooting fashion shows for Helmutt Lang.
- Mal0
A good paying gig will never be a music mag cover unless it's Rolling Stone or something and even then plenty of great photogs would do it for free just to get the cover
- Momentum20
ah aight... i thought XLR8R as a national magazine would pay good. So a Helmutt Land rep would look at a portfolio with an XLR8R shoot and be impressed by their name?

write Nigel ask him how much he got for the XlR8R spread. You would be surprised.

seriously V4 get over yourself

it's weird. One can do these sorts of jobs for that price, and over time, develop a style, then be asked to do something a bit more grand, then boom, you're getting better gigs, better pay, and better images. I don't think anyone who is offended by the price will be answering this call, but aspiring photographers looking to get a start just may. It seems like the same sort of thing as 'design my logo for $175', but it isn't.
- traut0
names are only a percentage of iit, its truly the work that really speaks, electricheat / nopattern they both did and still do stuff for xlr8r just on the fact that its help them land other work.
and i got someone whos into the gig and the price and from the burgh, thanks for everyones help. thanks moveinspace for the heads up on danny.

wow.. that was heated.. v4 needs to fucking chill. what ever happened to just doing something for the fun of it? i would have fucking done it for free if i was in pgh.
- dopepope0
v4 makes sense, but doesn't understand the industry I guess. I deal with photographers that drop 10x that to get their images in a magazine and get NO PAY. In fact, the idea of getting paid big bucks is pretty much a pipe dream for a lot of talented artists. Doing stuff like this may certainly be a beginning, but very well can sustain the life of one's career as well. Landing the adverts will come if your shit is good, your head clear, and will strong. Aint NO ONE starting with adverts and laughing at the people taking these gigs.

i do understand Joe, its just that at 28, i've had enough carrots in front of my face that i never caught, i don't think "the ropes" as our industry calls it should be "learned" like that.
If you want work done make it fair wages and you will find someone willing to do it, if your only option is to find a barrel scraper, don't be surprised by what you get.
my angst is from all of us knowing there have been clients overwork us and underpay us, all of us, ALL OF US
now one of us wants to treat a peer in a way we all know is disrespectful
it's just not worth it
and I keep posting so the trolls and the people grasping at straws hopefully realize they don't have to work like that or be treated that way
a contract is always necessary, always get half down and never charge less than 500 for a shoot
the amount of favors a man does in this business should remain limited
everyone keeps crying "notariety notariety" but it's no guarantee, it's a gamble
without proper time for setup staging and lighting the photograph i doubt will come across "overly cool" and be passed over as a press photo.
wow thanks for the opportunity
i'm more concerned with the money coming and going from my clients than what font to put their job in my cv with.
i hope you get it now.
like i said yesterday, it may not be shit, but it sure smells like it
- dopepope0
that's why I think you make total sense.
It should work that way, just sometimes doesn't.
At least for photographers. It's crazy, but I guess it makes them appreciate their spoils when they are at that point in their careers where they can actually get the spoils.

(Jun 27 06, 09:58)I think that one line defines every profession though
if you have those attributes already, you probably don't need to chase down work like that
but if anyone reading has been disagreeing with me and doesn't mind working for peanuts in an unstable environment...
try craigslist, tons of work on there for you to do for people that don't care, understand, or respect what you do
- dopepope0
true v4... I happen to think Timajicks work is way beyond average, it's quite often amazing. He's often struggling with such jobs. It doesn't mean his work is weak, or his client list lame, it just means he's interested in new images, to try new styles, to reinvent. The exposure is nice too. Fuck, we'd all love to get paid. But even LaChapelle does free jobs from time to time.
- version30
nicely said dope, you made me glimpse at the other side without the angst for a second
- dopepope0
I think it was your tone mostly that riled up the other side. Your points are valid.
- version30
i get that tone thing alot, i just have a problem with people expecting so much, so I turn and "expect" from them to show the point of view is BS
