about default lenses colour and default settings for an amateur (e.g. me):
Nikon D70s = Realistic/Traditional, like an italian movie. hard to get that cinema tone without filtering or becoming a pro (which takes a lot of work). Very good for printing. Hard to handle for casual photo.
Canon 20d = there's that overall tone which you find in Gus Van Sant's movies, also with fantastic detail. Good for screen. Prints nicely too. Outputs nicer snaps than the d70.

oh, and you need at least a 6.0 mega px camera for a decent professional print. more than that is irrelevant (except in some contrast colours) since the eye discards any resolution beyond 300 dpi, which is the default for 6.0 cameras.

seems like canon 20d is a good starter
engage, thats a very pretty camera but too expansive..

I was contemplating between the 24-105 vs 24-70. I chose the 24-70 it's faster than the 24-105 at 2.8 aperture. I know a lot of people that love's their 24-105 and are happy of iit at f/4. I also have the 70-200 f/2.8L IS just to go a little longer. I also have a 35mm f/14L which is my walk around lens. I love this baby, produces nice bokeh and the image quality is super nice.

i saw the Nikon D200 and it's a killer.
fucking great!

well dinky, it really depends on what you want to achieve.
if you want to learn the hard way, get a Nikon. To get nice pictures out of a Nikon you need to learn.
if you want to build one more of those zillion portfolios around the web really fast, get a Canon. It does all the work for you, but it doesn't make you a better photographer.
It's more or less like getting a piano or a synthetizer.

D70s.

I use a D70 and a 30D.
With the d70, you get a better kit lens. With the canon, better software.
I like the colors a bit more on the d70.

maybe get the d70, but instead of the kit lens get the new 18-200 vr, the most versatile "walking around" lens ever made

i think you should mind what you want to do with it.
I bought a d70s thinking i'd evolve to print and stuff like that, but i mostly use it for super-res web photos, and (although i don't regret it) i could do the same for the web with the d50.
there's no need in spending money in features you're not getting any profit from.

just a bump on my question. i called them but got voice recording.
"i heard that if you take it to canon they will clean it for free. does anyone know this to be true? i live right by the major canon headquarters and was thinking of bringing it in next week to get cleaned. "

well,
Nikon is a camera-brand only.
Canon is like Hyundai. They can make almost everything better (i.e. "hype"), but it's not a specific-driven company. Canon started with Xerox and Hyundai with vacuum cleaners.

so is it basically between nikon and canon? i'm half-heartedly looking at entry level digital slrs. any strong feelings about olympus?

I'm just partial to nikon, get the lens rand mentioned and a d200. it will set you back but at least you won't be bummed in 6 months.

hmm seems like d20 would be something that i would get to use it for just taking pics..
but d70 would be for actually learning ...
and d200 for higher qualtiy....

one thing i was thinking about ..
since d70 seems to be more frequent, would use lens be cheaper?
- lvl_130
go to a camera store and try out both the d70 and the 20d. after you hold them both in your hand i think you will the difference.
i mean i'm not all about lugging around a tank around but the d70 is small. could be a good thing or a bad thing i guess. i just think the latter.
i need substance damnit! : )
i think the d70 is much more comparable to the canon digital rebel...not the 20d.
- ********0
ok i think d70
now.. who wants to loan me 1000?
- lvl_130
umm yeah. what i meant instead of "i think you will the difference."
i think you will be able to feel the difference.
- lvl_130
no damnit! i was trying to push you towards the 20d!
haha. really no matter what you go for it will be good. they are all pretty solid cameras.
