I believe in a tasteful, text-only resume. Let your typographic skills serve as a little forshadowing of what your portfolio may contain, but don't go over the top.
When I first tried to get a job out of college I was a rebel and a renagade and had a crazy-ass resume that was all color and cut to a non-standard size. I wound up getting a job with it, but found out quickly that its not the way to go.
It was particularly embarassing for me when the HR lady made photocopies of my resume (she put the original in a file) and gave the photocopy to the CD right before I went in to interview with him. It looked like shite!!!!
A resume needs the be 8.5x11, black and white, copyable, faxable, scanable, and 3-hole-punchable.
Maybe work on a classy, exotic container/folder for the resume, but keep the resume itself very standard.

People in Columbus are just as bad as the cows that graze the field. Close minded and sheltered.

Let me clarify, the rednecks over there

I make a A5 size portfolio they can keep with a business card included.
If they want to know more, they will ask for the CV, but I have always went straight to the interview and never been asked for a CV.

yo jay, i reckon you add a headline and a few images and you've got yourself the NY Times. seriously i reckon you cut it down severely maybe only last 4-5 years and tighten up your descriptions. the resume by david glanz posted here is a good example. make it real easy on the eye and make use of white space. you've listed the programs used on the right then at the end of the resume you've listed them again??? make it all 1 page and not so squashed

Jay, couple thoughts
remove non design related jobs. IE data entry. we don't need to know you did this to get though a slow period in your career. and the bullets, not working for you.
