The white t-shirt represents the most visually basic of shirts, as does Helvetica/Arial represent the most visually basic of typefaces.
An analogy I figured would be easily understood.

It's the pure 'hatred' of Arial I don't get. To abhor something so basic. You can be indifferent, sure. But to actually be driven by such emotion... it's weird. I likened it to someone saying "OMFG that basic white Tshirt is repulsive!!!!!"

Many of these bad fonts might have a use in some contrived scenario, but system fonts used for anything other than writing code are always the worst choice.
Also, it really hurts when people use bitmap fonts in Flash without putting them on an exact pixel.

I don't like arial or comic sans, but they do what they were designed for, to hint at small sizes on screen relatively well. However not as nice as verdana or anything.
I would have to say I really dislike the avant garde alternates, there is really nothing i like about them, and avant garde in general, i think there are other geometric sans serifs that are far nicer.
Rotis is a close second. Obviously there are ones that I think are piss ugly like the majority of thematic display faces etc, but I don't even think they are worth mentioning.
