Gill Sans can be great. It has a great italic, but the heavier weights become quite dorky. It's numbers are also pretty ugly.

yes! the SAND font is the worst.

any font that has been well made (even aesthetically less pleasing for us designer taste), fonts with proper kerning, good overall balance, is not bad in my book. same goes for Comic Sans.
There's quite a few fonts, on the other hand, out there, that just don't look balanced and kern badly in large amounts of text, those are usually the worst.
