I know what you mean, khilled. I'm just thinking about how the radio stations would think about it. So many of them play crappy music (at least here in Ottawa), you have to wonder if it's for the quota or if it's what the fans want. The stations get overtaken by other stations after just a few years. Thank goodness there's a new one here in Ottawa. They actually play anything the fans want, and I have discovered that many Ottawaians have good taste in music.

We are all forgetting two of the grandmasters of the canadian music scene. Michie Mee & LA Luv and Organized Rhyme - old school rulers from up north.

it can be sure but the things government are doing are to support independant business rather than corporate business...it's still about good business just not american based vertically integrated corps.

khilled, not everything in the american music is that way. Just like not all canadian music sounds lame.

Bottom line is:
the quota hasn't really done anything bad for the industry...

bare naked ladies and rush pretty much sum up canada's music scene

it' s still 'mainstream' bs that gets on the air which is why some people are cynical and say it's all shit on the air, but the good part is that at least it's canadian and mostley independant 'mainstream' bs...nickleback arn't indie bu they are mainstream to the teeth but they might not be possible without the way the canadian music industry is set up

//economics has absolutely nothing to do with it.

i don't think it is like that in the us but the us industry is set up differently because they're not dealing with the same environment canadians are...how can i deny american indie music, ny punk to seattle, hip hop and everything else? but if canadians didn't do the stuff they do we wouldn't be able to join the noise

So really it is just that it is the only way they can compete, because it would just be like American radio then, all bullshit.

So are there any indie stations?
When I say 'indie', I mean independent, not some lame marketing term.
Do they have to follow the same rules? If so, that is unfair to the canadian people.

sorry, but this is fascinating to me.

it's be whatever artist the american based coprs. are trying to sell....it has nothing to do specifically with 'americans' it has everything to do with the huge industry and market in the us...don't forget about europe, no doubt we'd be overloaded with what's his face and abba
this is why it has LOTS to do with economics

Well, I know my university has one that is independent for the most part. Students run it, but I'm not sure about the quota. I doubt there is one, although most of the music is probably local. A lot of the music is considered to be weird, depending on the host.
